Maiden voyage of my new to me xterra 70...

I read and re-read the manual, but it's going to take some more reading as my in the field fiddling was clumsy at best. I thought the darn thing was defective at first but then found out I was trying to hunt in pinpoint mode!! Kept reading -6 on the meter and beeping like crazy. Had to smile. I used the 3Khz coil and it worked like a charm. Most interesting find took the most work. Alongside where they tore down a house I got a signal that kept reading 44-46. It intrigued me enough to keep digging until at about 2 feet(thank goodness for my tile spade) I unearthed a license plate sized piece of crap. Dug under it(just in case) but nothing else. Had visions of a Ball jar full of coins but it wasn't my day. For the day, lots of whatzits, lots of practice(4 hours) and some keepers. I got a 1934D merc, a 36D,37D,44 and 45 wheaties, and a couple of clad quarters.

Question, why in the hell did Minelab make the ears on there 6 inch DD coil so thick?? The coil bolts that held the 9 inch coils won't thread as they are too short. Weird. Anyone know of the best and cheapest place to get one a bit longer?? headed back to this construction site over the weekend as they are moving right along and it will be paved in the not too distant future. If one of those jars of coins shows up, I'll let you know. Hope springs eternal or whatever. HH. Bob.

I am sure Kellyco.com could help you out on the longer coil bolt but you could check your local hardware store for a nylon bolt and nut.

Sounds like you had a good first outing Bob. Congratulations on the Merc and Wheats!

They made those ears thicker because they had problems with ear breakage on coils with thinner ones.
As for longer nylon bolts.....should be able to pick them up at any home/hardware store that has those pull-out drawers of specialty hardware.

 glad you had a good time

Thanks for the tips on where to find a bolt, guys. Just FYI, our local Menards didn't have one any longer than the ones Ihave, and none of the places they suggested here in town had anything either. AHHHHHH, life in a small town. They suggested the internet or a city. In Omaha this weekend I'll stop by a Lowes and a Home Depot and try my luck. Thanks again and HH. Bob.

Good job Bob! A Merc & 4 wheats is an excellent first day of hunting with a new detector. I also had the same "small town" problem trying to find a longer nylon bolt for the "Digger" coil. I just ended up biting the bullet & buying the Minelab coil care kit for the X-terra online.

The digger coil that I just bought came with the bolt and it fit my lower shaft fine. Wonder if they realized that was an issue and started supplying the bolt.

Hey Bob, if you have a local Menards, you aren't in a small town! My nearest Menards is in Council Bluffs, 85 miles away, and one of the towns I go through to get there has actual traffic lights!
The local True Value hardware store has all kinds of stuff like this. If you don't happen to make it to the City this weekend, let me know what it is you need and I can drop one in the mail to you. HH Randy

Thanks Mapper, I wondered about that... Because all of the pictures show their coils with a mounting bolt attached to them. So out of curiosity, I e-mailed Coiltek today & this was their reply/below. Apparently Bob & I shop at the same store.

Hi John,
All of our new coils should come with a nut and bolt attached to the mounting area.

I hope this helps.

I just got my digger coil in the mail, it came with the bolt and wingnut, but I had to make a plastic washer as a shim, as the tabs are a little wider then the 505 mount. No biggy.

Had it out for a few minutes, just so I can say that I tried it, will take it out tomorrow for a bit.

At first I thought I had a ground balancing problem, as I could not balance it at any sensitivity, but when I switch the channel it was fine and performs as expected.

Most companies would have taken the opportunity in your case to say " Don't worry a new bolt/screw is in the mail ". What the heck do you need to do, beg for one.

A couple little details worth noting......

Bob/Nebr was asking about a bolt for Minelab's 6" coil.

And diggindowndeep should contact the dealer that his :coiltec: coil came from for the bolt. It was shipped from :coiltec: with one, and for them to ship one from Austrailia would cost more than the bolt itself.

Hello all, I just read these last couple of posts & wanted to clear the "missing bolt" subject up from my perspective. I just assumed that when Bob was referring to using a 3 kHz coil & it was a 6" Minelab DD, I thought that he was talking about the "Digger" coil. Because the only LF coil that comes in the 6" DD variety for the X-terra is the Coiltek "Digger". Otherwise I would of never chimed in with my 2 cents worth. For what ever reason my coil didn't come with a bolt, when in reality it should have. Oh' well, things happen... I didn't fully put 2 & 2 together that it actually came with a mounting bolt until after reading mapper65's post, along with seeing the advertisement pic's of the "Digger"coil with a bolt attached to it. In Coiltek's defense, I didn't ask for a bolt because mine was missing, I asked if they came with one, that's all. If I had asked for one because mine never came with one, I'm more than confident that Trevor w/ Coiltek would have either sent me a bolt or cleared this matter up in a timely manner regardless. Once again, this was all after the fact for me, as I already remedied the "missing" bolt thing myself, not knowing that it was supposed to come with one to begin with. Everything in life is temporary, so no biggie & no worries...

HH!

Glad that you got things squared away John. I'm looking forward to seeing your finds.

The purpose of my post was only to clear up the misunderstanding. I really don't want any bad PR mis-directed at :coiltec: by anyone thinking that they treat customers poorly. They just prefer to have their dealer network handle things at a local level rather than having everyone individually shipping internationally (<-read that they want their customer's issues dealt with quickly).
I understand that your coil didn't come with a bolt, but it should have, and I'm sure that it was shipped with one by :coiltec:. They make those ears beefy and know that it takes a long bolt. And they also want you to have everything you need to mount your new coil to get swinging and find great treasures.

And Bob/Nebr...
In reality, I believe that :minelab: coils come with bolts too. Again, I would check with the dealer that sold the coil about "a missing bolt"....you certainly paid enough for it.

Thanks Old Longhair... The intent with my initial post wasn't meant to be directed at Coiltek in a negative way. I think that I conveyed that with my previous post, sometimes things just happen & I get it... I also forgot to mention that Coiltek replied to my question the same day & within only a matter of a couple of hours. Which is excellent C/S IMHO, especially considering the 14 1/2 hour time difference between the two of us. Based on their response time alone, I think that they're a very consumer friendly company. It's all good... Not to open up another can of worms here, but hopefully they will break out with a "Digger II", 7.5 kHz 6" DD coil in the very near future...just saying.

Hi guys. I bought my coil used from another guy, not a dealer. A missing bolt is no big deal. Finding a long enough one is taking a bit longer than I thought it would though, here in the sticks of NE Nebraska!!! My window of opportunity is closing on some tear down of old houses that are being replaced by a big pharmacy and it's parking lot. A small coil is necessary to see thru all the junk in the ground. Lots of mixed signals with every swing. I did manage some silver and wheaties and whatzits already so all wasn't lost. Thanks for all of the input and HH. Bob.

I sent you a "2-inch nylon bolt" care package this morning Bob. Should be there mid-week. HH Randy
