Mapping a search area

Just wondering if anyone has use their GPSR to map out a search area. I'm currently trying to map out an old mill which was built beside an abandoned rail line from the mid to late 1800's.
I noticed a siding on an old topo map and wondered why it was there. Talking with a few locals, I found that it serviced a long gone mill beside the main line. I still don't know what it produced, but so far I have found what seem to be the rough area it occupied. I drop way points around the perimeter of where I find the most signals. Probably a lot of old iron parts and trash but perhaps a gem or two still in the ground. Once I have it plotted I will start some serious detecting and digging. Anyone else ever tried this method? Just curious.
