Mason Jars

During the years before, during and after the depression that is the way people had food to eat in the wintertime was to can and preserve vegs, meats and fruits in Mason Jars and, therefore, used Mason jar lids with the glass inerts and rubber sealers under the lids to seal the jars to the lids, tightly! There was no trash pickup long ago, so that is why so many of the jar lids are dug up! The glass jars usually were used over and over again until chipped or broken and then discarded but broken by the weather in time! I helped mom use the zinc lids during canning time and I've used the newer screw type lids with seperate insert tin seals when canning my vegs out of the small back yard garden that I had for several years! Don't can any more because what I use and eat is just as cheap to buy precanned and a lot less work than a garden and canning at my age! Hope and pray you find a lid already attached to the jar with lots of silver and gold coins inside! Amen! They did bury money in years past because of not trusting the banks because of the crash and depression in the 30's and looks like it may be that way again....only most of the the coins minted now days aren't worth saving because of valueless metals! Whatever goes around comes around, whether 'tis good or bad! May God have mercy upon His Children and our children and grandchildren! Amen! Ma Betty

Yeah, my finds are always without the bottoms. Some people use the lids as drink coasters, porcelain & all, steve in so az

Neat idea, Steve, as I have never heard of using them as drink coasters but in a kitchen or home decorated country style that would be a good use for all those old zinc lids with porcelain inserts! Some people are just too clever!!  Ma Betty

Over the years I've dug my share of Mason Jar lids and a few that included the jars but each time the glass was broken without anything being in them.

I make oil lamps out of the jars themselfs and sale them.

Thanks Travis as that is another neat idea in making oil lamps out of the Mason Jars...sounds like work but fun, too! May God Bless! Amen! Ma Betty

I have dug hundreds of them and have yet to find a jar of treasure attached. At least you got some nails!
