Have you tried looking for local clubs ?
I know Plymouth has one, but they don’t really go out much. Basically drink, coffee and talk.

Still you may learn something.
Even their stories could give leads to some good ground.
Ask questions.
Ask about old swimming holes.
Fairgrounds. Political rally sites.
Old churches. Abandoned picnic grounds.
Actually. They have plenty to give.
You can research that too.
And maybe some new young blood may get some old koots off their butts and go out with you.
