May Finds I never posted

Three different sites on the same day, was taking a friend around to some of my regular haunts. A slug of a large cent and a cool flat button were the highlight of the day. The old mongrammed ring was an interesting find in my own back yard. I was talking to my neighbor about it later and told him about it and the letter "H". I learned that his good friend Harriette who lived in the house I live in now probably lost it as a child. They are still good friends to this day, so I will be returning it to her at some point.

First hunt was at a local salt water beach that had been washed out late in the season. Lots of silver and old coppers had been pulled out prior to my learning of it. I was fortunate enough to find my first silver coin at a beach, as well as my first ever V-nickel. The funny part was that I didn't know I had even found silver until a buddy was taking a look at my finds listening to me whine about not finding any silver while he had found 5-6 silver coins. Live and learn I guess!

The second hunt was another club fun hunt set up by a member. Another couple old houses dating back to the 1700's, as well as some Revolutionary war drill grounds near by. The 2 large cents had much more detail pre-cleaning. I used to be a strong proponant of peroxiding the heck out of old coppers. I found a fugio last year I soaked for hours without any detail loss. These two large cents lost all of the green patina after a 5 minute soak and gentle brushing with a tooth brush. I went from being able to read the liberty on the 1837, to barely able to read the date.

First hunt in this series of hunts was at my church which I hit pretty hard last year. It produced a lot of silver in the past, not so much this time. I ended up detecting an area I had steered clear of last year because it was a dirt driveway where those who work at the chuch drive up and park. REALLY hard digging normally, but the ground was fairly soft this time of the year. I found my first 1909 wheatie, no S or VDB. :( The interesting story here was the IH. I got a strong signal right on the sloped edge between the grass and the dirt driveway. I look down to whereI was pin pointing and I see a small sliver of green. I'm thinking, is that my target, on edge, sticking out of the ground? Yep, it was, a 1893 Indian Head basically on the surface. It was in fairly nice shape too!!

The 2nd hunt in this series of picks was at a grammer school a friend of mine had found lots of silver in. I found wheaties and buffalo nickels, the no date one turned out to be 1921 after I cleaned it. The "Sisters" ring was reading sweet and when it popped out I thought for sure I had found my first gold ring. Even the gem looked read. However, no inner mark, and the words "sisters" soon set me straight. Ahh well, it was a nice day out hunting. I posted the shoe eyelets, small gromett, and washer because all of these were found with my 12X15SEF at 4-7 inches. I'm really impressed with the separation the 12X15 coil has.

Too bad them LC's weren't in better condition. Oh well! You have to take 'em as you get 'em. Did the 21 Buffalo have an S Mint Mark on it??? Congrats on some neat finds once again. Continued Success, Good Luck and HH to you.:detecting:
