Hello to all,

This is my first post in this section, I am not sure if it is the right forum or not so forgive me if it is in the wrong place. First off I want to say that up till yesterday I totally loved this hobby. I still do but from now I I am going to have to be very very cautious. Let me explain, I took my youngest son with my detecting at one of the local parks here. There is a full sized volley ball court (sand based) he has been wanting to go for some time, so I figured easy to dig should find lots of stuff right... Well after about 5 minutes he had found a couple pennies and he was hooked and wanting to look for more. Well he kept getting a solid signal but he couldn't locate it so he started using my pin-pointer. After a minute he said very loudly "DAD" I looked over to him and he was holing my pin-pointer up with a DAMN Syringe stuck to the end of it...:ranting: Needless to say I told my daughter who was playing in the sand to get out of the sand and go play on the swings and I took the pin-pointer from my son. The syringe had some blood residue on it as well as what looked like heroine in the tube ( I had seen to much of that from my line of work to not know what it was). I was able to dispose of the syringe safely and my son still wanted to detect so I figured OK but I am watching over very carefully and he was not allowed to use his hands anymore. Well no more needles but we found 2 one sided razor blades in the sand. After that I just gave up and took my kids home. I told local LEO's about it and they said nothing could be done. I was not surprised by the answer but did tell them that I am going to go back this week and do the best I can to get the court cleaned up. Not just for my kids sake but for all the kids that play in that big sand box. So please be careful out there especially if you bring the little ones with you. You always are careful with people around and not think that the danger could be coming from the items in the ground.

Regards
Ron

I started MD here in Abilene, TX.in 1989. Abilene is a city of 1,000,000. I hunt 10 to 15 different city parks a month. In these parks I would find 2 -3 drug items a month from open can and bottles of boozes 9 beer & hard), roaches, full joints of MJ, crack pipes, to dirty needles.

In 2003 I moved to a college college of 12,000 and 3 city parks. I something every week.

New Year morning 2006 I move to Houston, TX I am guess what 14 mil. in Harris. Co. After digging in the smaller cities and town I would hunt with gloves.

In 4 and a half years I found I few condoms but drug items in the Houston parks

Dizzamn! Thanks for the post...I guess I'll start wearing shoes in the sand!

I have found the same sort of things while detecting parks, wood-chip plays grounds with my kids in Alaska. Fresh water swimming beaches gave me the willies after finding quite a bit of disgusting and dangerous stuff while detecting in chest deep water. The wood-chip park was rather large with a lot of apparatus; the bums and druggies would go there at night and sleep under the boardwalks and raised decks of some of the play equipment where they would leave all kinds of foul and disgusting drug paraphernalia and human waste. I always did a walk through when I got there with the kids, looking for such things. The swimming area was unbelievable in the amount of rusting cans with sharp exposed edges (where half the can had rusted away), fishing hooks, knives, broken bottles, and all kinds of other things just waiting to slice a foot open. I was astounded at the amount of stuff I pulled up from the bottom while detecting. And to top that off, we used to let our kids play in the McDonald's playrooms. You know that big bin of colorful balls kids love to jump in? My kids found a hypodermic needle in there, 2 pocket knives, one of them open, a soiled diaper, then it was in the paper that some teenagers were caught having sex in there under the balls. Yep, there's a lot of disgusting, sick people in this world, can't be too careful. Now that I live in rural Virginia and hunt Civil War relics, a bad day is stepping in a fresh cow Pattie.

This is a very good reminder in any forum.
That's a good idea to go back and clean that place up on your own.
I must admit that my first knee jerk reaction would have been to plan on goin back there once in
a while at night and actualy catch the low life junkies in the act.

I can understand them throwin away used works but o toss razor blades into the sand ?!?!?!?
That , to me, seems flat out criminal and i would think the local Police would be interested in patrolin that park often.

Man, i HATE junkies with a passion.
I'd wanna catch one in that park and stomp it. :veryangry:

What's a "LEO" ?
