memorable events from a dig

From the land of the Bluenose.....one thing that is seldom mentioned in posts is what happens out side the ordinary or those things that we're glad no one was around to see. Slow night here at work so I thought I'd share a few of those "moments" with you.
The other year I had an article published in the Western and Eastern Treasure and had quite a bit of the story edited out as I'm sure it wasn't in the realm of "family reading." The story was about A field in Rawdon and what was taken out was that LandMine Wade and I when leaving the field found a fellow dead along side the road. What we thought at first was a motorcycle accident we later learned was indeed not the case. The 44 year old fellow had taken a heart attack and died before he hit the pavement and the gutter. Was this a sign of things to come?
Next trip to that field was again a very productive one. This time I was digging solo enjoying the solitude of digging on a great Nova Scotian summmer day. My attention was diverted by a male pheasant who was squawking up a storm....letting me know that I was approaching his neck of the woods as I was doing the treeline at the edge of the field. All of a sudden this bouy trips and ends up on the ground looking into this big brown solitary eye............well let me tell you it shocked the halibut out of me. Almost had the big one you...almost ended up in that great ocean in the sky rowing the eternal dory without a port. Lame brain here gathered his composure after a spell and come to find that I had tripped over a dead cow! Lord love a duck. Anyway told the farmer about that one.
This particular farm also had another field where the original family farm house had stood so one day I tried around that as the productive part of the field was getting old hat and I wanted a change in scenery. Well I was minding my own business, with my back to the barn when I got this feeling at the back of my neck that I was not alone...turning around I see these two massive beasts behind me....Clydesdales I think they are called. Mister man those are huge. Being from a fishing community on the South Shore, my closest encounter with a horse had been watching a cowboy ride off into the sunset on some western John Wayne type of movie. With a speed that even amazed me I ran and hide behind a tree as it was a good distance to the fence and this bouy is very slow rounding second! Mustering up my limited courage I peeked from behind the tree to see where these "human flesh eaters" were and saw.....that they hadn't even moved but were standing in the same spot looking at me with this sort of quizzical smerk. It took all I could do to stop a clear yellow liquid from Niagara Falling down my leg! The standoff continued till I happened to look up and notice that I was behind an apple tree. It was clear that these beasts had feasted on the apples that they could reach leaving the lower limbs empty. A plot hatched in my terrorized mind. Exstending my Garrett to the last notch on the stem and holding it by the armrest I was able to swing my machine and knock some apples from the tree . Man are those Garretts versitile! Still the animals didn't move but I could tell I had their attention. Having been a semi pro fastball pitcher for many years I wound up and threw as hard as I could without taking what was left of my arm off. After the third apple was thrown the horses strolled towards where they believed the apples to be and I bolted in the opposite direction over the fence towards the road.
I related this incident to Fred, who owned the property and he laughed so hard at this bouy that I thought I'd have to call 911 for a heart attack victim! After he calmed down he related to me how tame and friendly Rex and Bob were and how they were working horses as he offers sleigh rides in the winter. The final laugh of the day however went to me as I presented him with my only find of the day from that part of the field...a horseshoe!

in your own way you can give Betty a run for her money as a poet! <img src="/metal/html/lol.gif" border=0 width=15 height=15 alt=":lol">

I keep tellin' Steve to write a book... but after reading a bunch of your stories, I think you should give it a shot.
Something tells me there's going to be a lot of laughing going on in MI in June <img src="/metal/html/smile.gif" border=0 width=15 height=15 alt=":)"> Lord love a duck, you are a funny buoy <img src="/metal/html/lol.gif" border=0 width=15 height=15 alt=":lol"> <img src="/metal/html/lol.gif" border=0 width=15 height=15 alt=":lol">

Do you know that Missouri is famous for the Clydesdale horses which are well known, as they are raised by the Anheiser Bush family and participate in parades...even the Rose Bowl? They sure are beautiful animals!!
God Bless & keep the stories coming!
Betty

Once I was thrown from a horse when I was a young kid and the horse just kept rarring up on its hind feet and raising its front feet over my head - man that was sooooo scary - glad the penny worth of 'amusement' ended and the mechanical horse quit moving. <img src="/metal/html/lol.gif" border=0 width=15 height=15 alt=":lol">
Can't say I've had those kinds of experiences while detecting but I could tell ya a few things (in private - Lord knows I hate to embarrass myself in large groups.) Let's just say one time there was an incident during an 'exercise' - I was a policeman (suprevisor type) and there was a tree and it dealt with a pair of handcuffs. Use your imagination.
Fear is returning from an airplane crash in the woods where everything had been cleaned up and the smell of flesh is present and....it is getting dark and the access point where anyone else is is a long way off. Many a time I kept looking behind me. I was providing inside cordoned area security.
Fear is being a radio operator and having just lost all contact with the DEW line (early warning system of the 60s and 70s) radio stations. 15 minutes to re-establish contact or the B52s will be launching to Russia. As time dwindles down to the last minute I know the B52s all over the USA and other countries are on the runways with engines running. I know all the ICMB (missile) silos have opened their hatches.
At 30 seconds before the 15 minutes is expired I receive a frantic phone call from one of the radio operators of one of the DEW line stations. He says "call off the bombers and all the rest of the forces....we are all A-OK....a construction digger (backhoe) was digging in Canada and 'snap' there went the phone system between us and you guys...CALL OFF THE BOMBERS!!!!!!.
That was in 1970 and I was the radio operator and was working at Headquarters, Strategic Air Command, Offutt AFB, Nebraska. Everything we ever knew and had experienced could have been changed - or ended - that day.
God was still in control but had it been left to mankind it would have been a rainstorm few would have survived.

From the land of the Bluenose...still have nightmares from my 15 years of protecting and serving....walking into a room and having a bouys brains fall off a ceiling onto your head after a double barrel 12 gauge dance under the chin..a child with over 30 cigeret burns on it's little body and of course the generals wife who bled to death at a card table not knowing her life's blood was seeping from her body. Lord hear my prayer!

The things we have seen and others have seen it is no wonder why we sometimes become sinical. The horrors that satan has put people through and others have had to be on the sidelines to watch are beyond belief - but we know these things happen(ed).
God will balance the scales in the end but for now we can seek comfort in knowing what the future holds - and satan isn't going to get away with it - any of it.
It is like we have seen a part of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil - and the evil is so horrifying.
God grant us peace and comfort. Remind us Lord for us to Accept the the things we cannot change, Courage to change the things we can and Lord, the wisdom to know the difference.
