metal coil bolt on Cortes?

mepot

New member
I don't post alot here, but I sure lurk-alot.(maybe that should be my forum name (HAHA)

Anyways ,I currently have a Silver Umax, and it has a plastic coil bolt.I just bought a used Cortes(moving on up)
and it has a metal coil bolt. I thought about swapping the plastic bolt to the Cortes, but the hole through the coil is
too small for the 1/4" bolt.

I guess my question is,is it ok to use a metal bolt to hold the coil to the lower rod?
TIA,I enjoy the forum.

They used them for years with no problems that I'm aware of. I have them on my SSumax, Eldorado and Conquistador and haven't seen any evidence of a problem to date.

Follow up to my previous. I've been able to find smaller nylon/composition whatever they are in smaller diameters at one of our hardware outlets. I've traded these back and forth with the metal and as I mentioned before, haven't been able to see any difference in performance. If you're really concerned you could try that or drill out the coil and rod to fit the larger size and replace the metal screw but I'll be surprised if you will notice any difference in performance.

The metal bolt shouldn't effect the operation of the detector. It is fixed in place, not moving through the signal field, so the machine should not see it. The same is true of the coil wire. It has metal in it but is fixed in place in relation to the coil. That being said I still prefer to use the nylon bolts.

Like BarberBill said... I have them on machines now too... They don't seem to cause a continuous problem in all metal either, you should try it... They were there longggg before the synthetics were there... Even now have them 2 on separate machines and with all the various coils changed, they never have caused a problem... my 2 cents...

I had to drill all my coils and shafts to be the larger size (to make them match). Tesoro said they would do it for me for free if I wanted, but it was a breeze. They also sent me some plastic bolts/wingnuts for free.

I have found in testing with trash present that a good target (if detected) will register at a reduced depth. The bolt being disc'ed out and/or GB out may decrease the detectors performance. Try testing with and without to verify that the metal bold isn't causing interference. A simple air test should give the answer.

If you try to drill it with a spiral drill you might have trouble. Plastic will grab pull it through and make a mess. There's only about .050 to .060 difference, that's .030 to .025 per side. Use a 1/4 inch reamer or 1/4 straight drill. I have been doing it for 29 yrs. and it seam good to me.
