Metal Detector used to recover $7,000.00 ring from septic tank!!

uke: Amazing! Now I wonder how many rings are down in tanks or in city sewer lines that were flushed on purpose? That was one tough customer though...that kind of lady didnt deserve a good guy to come along and save the day like you did! Well done! Enjoyed the story greatly!

We have been enduring a harsh winter here and it looks like better weather is finally on the way. In 2012 I had a banner year with great weather and hunted as much as I wanted to. 2013 was much less productive than 2012 and this year is still a question mark!!

C.J. a great recollection on a very challenging recovery!! You earned every penny of that $100 reward and then some!!! Been there done that myself. Found articles of value with little or even no thanks for returning them.
I have found wallets and returned them with very little to no appreciation or reward. I remember finding a large roll of $20 bills bound with a rubber band and upon returning to the owner (there was a driver's license attached) I got absolutely no thanks....BUT.....fortunately, that is the exception to the rule and I also have had 'heart warming' thanks as well over the years! and I will keep returning lost stuff.
I will be catching a plane in just a few hours for
Englandand enjoying 2 weeks of visiting AND metal detecting!!! I hope to post some awesome finds!! H.H. and wishing GOLD in everyone's scoops

Yep, it happens. You know more of a story then I remember of one in New Hartford. I believe I read about it in the Hartford Courant. A woman had her rings go down the pooper, sucked up by the Stinker (Russ's Septic) in New Hartford, taken to the transfer plant in Hartford. Several years later a workman was cleaning one of the sludge pits at the Hartford facility, found the ring and track it back and returned it. No metal detecting involved, just Fate! The ring had been lost for about 15 years, and the POMG on the inside from Savitt Jewelers came to the rescue in 2002. Just searched for the story...the link is below! See my mind is still good enough to remember the story after 11 years!
Wish I was closer we could get a "cup of Joe" and hit your favorite beach...I miss the area, although the Cape is a place of its own. Keep on swinging and dig the deep ones.

Being left with nothing to show for our efforts is fairly common as you have found out. I can think of several other Hunters, including myself, who have had similar experiences.
One such experience involved my driving to a beach twenty plus miles away during a work day to find a man's wedding band. After I had recovered the jewel and handed it to him I got a heart felt thank you and an offer to retire for a cool one at a nearby restaurant. I mentioned to him that I don't charge for my efforts, but a few dollars toward the cost of batteries or perhaps a nice meal somewhere for my efforts would be appreciated.
He said he would get a gift certificate at a nice seafood place he knew as I left for home. Well I have had to be satisfied with a powerful, heart felt hug and a beer as my reward and since there was no binding agreement (contract) I just chalked it up to being another learning experience!!
The woman, an old customer of mine, wasn't paying me for recovering the ring as much as she was paying me for my plumbing expertise. We had not discussed price and I charged her based on the efforts I made in removing the toilet at her request, crawling under the house and finally locating and recovering the gem!! The price was minimal considering the efforts I made yet she still grouched about it being too much!!! No appreciation in her soul!!!

Great recovery cj.. its a shame the son didnt hire you instead of the old lady , I believe he would have been a whole more appreciative. $7000 ring and she is gonna scwabble over a lousy $100 ... I guess some people think the world owes them.. I hope you never get a call for this type of recovery again.. however if I ever find myself in this predicament I who im gonna call ha ha..great story and thanks for sharing..
Seniors and some raised by them are warped in how they view money. When a dollar was a days pay and hard work and hard to come by it is mind boggling to see a hundred dollars go for a days work. At the same time they have lived through deflation and often part with money without flinching for things they want. People are oddly complicated and often their minds are hodgepodges of inconsistent values. People are funny. Well, other people are funny.

..for instance, some old dope that would crawl into a septic tank looking for a ring, knowing what awaits and with no assurance that its there to begin with!..
Two things we got out of this, One, that old lady had no concept of the "value" in real working man terms of that 7k ring, or the kind of physical effort required to pop up a crapper, crawl under a house, and then down into a gosh darn septic tank full of rich mans crap!
The other thing we learned is CJ is one tough, persistent, customer service oriented Son of a Bleep! And maybe even a third lesson, a guy has to know when to say "No" to some jobs, and just go hunt a beach somewhere!

CJ you are awesome! You went far beyond what anyone would expect, I'm sorry that she was so mean, you deserved to be rewarded financial for your hard work and praised by her to her friends, not moaned about. Some people just don't get it. Awesome recovery mate
CJ, you have the admiration of all of your MDing buddies here. Great story! Her actions sure seemed to have stuck in your craw - sometimes telling about it helps us to move on. Forget that old miser!
BTW, thanks for the info on concrete septic tank construction. Not that I ever plan to check a used one out but who knows? We all may run into a "lost in the crapper" situation and we'll have the benefit of your experience to help us direct some young whippersnapper on where to look.
