Metal types / identification

Stopped By the "Stadium" tonight and dug up a 1935 Merc
Not bad for a place that has been hunted to death and i think i"m the only one left.wasting his time looking for old coins there.
I have actually been told by old timers that anything Worth finding has been found their
Well to date i have found:
3 Indian Head pennies
1 1918 walking liberty quarter
1 1964 Rossie
1 1886 seated dime
2 mercs
2 gold wedding bands
2 silver rings

Well anyway... back to my subject line
I found a knob today at the "stadium" as it will be referred to in future posts that appears to be silver but could be aluminum "but seems to heavy" or possibly stainless steel " but to shinning"

Question: how do you identify stainless , sterling , aluminum from one another.

PS; Brought my equipment in tonight and gave it a good bath and fresh batteries and on vacation next week ( I'm gonna dig allot of holes )

especially when hunting on a salt beach.......in the dirt and woods, probably not as bad and maybe somewhat closer on i.d., but u actually never know.

here are examples of some pennies i dug yesterday.............none ot them read as copper or pennies, but sounded great and read as nickels or alum.

salt does crazy things to certain targets.
