meteorites

Has anyone ever found meteorites with there 705. Which.coil would be best suited to find them I only have.the stock 7.5 nine inch right now.

I have the 10.5 HF DD coil and it is very sensitive to iron. However I have never hunted meteorites so I don't know if this would be a good thing.

I think the coiltek would go the deepest possibly or a big coil. Use prospecting mode to go even bigger and dig everything. I think I may have found a small one but never cut it to be sure. Might send it in. Also take a big earth magnet to help the search.

If you watch the TV show Meteorite Men, they usually use a Fisher F75 with the stock (I believe) 11x9 DD coil. The F75 is 14 khz so I would think that either the 18.75 khz or 7.5 khz 10.5" DD coils should work just as well using the Xterra. The other detector they use quite a bit when they are looking for deep meteorites is the GPX 5000 which is a PI unit.

I think I might give my stock 7.5 kh. coil a shot I would think they might be hard to come across anyways. But I have some big field areas I can hunt that most likely
don't have any thing laying in them I'll hunt in all metal with the sense as high as I can and never know might get lucky and find an old coin while hunting.

My opinion is that meteorites are everywhere---they are just hard to identify, Unless they are fresh falls the look like terrestrial rocks. I have a nice collection from purchases and from all of the years I spent perparing specimens for collectors and making Cosmic jewelry. I have collected minerals & fossils for over 50 years and still haven't found one myself. I'm certain that I have walked over thousands . Take the deserts of Africa for example. (I was supposed to be in on this-but that's another story). Prior to the extensive searches of those areas in the early '90's----all meteorites were pretty expensive. Before it became restricted a few years ago----thousands of TONS of meteorites flooded the market. These included lunar and martian specimens. Prior to that time-there was only one lunar in private hands for sale-the price-1 million per gram. You can get a "piece of the moon now for less than $800.00 per gram-cut,polished with a COA. Common meteorites sell for .20 cents a gram. (that's the bottom line-most sell for more) and they a readily available.
If I had more time OR sometime in the future I will list some TID's for various types on my 705. mean while if you are really interested---purchase a common iron and a stony iron meteorite on E-bay. You could probably have them in a few days ,delivered for under $15.
It's still my desire to find my own. I am confident that i could identify the weathered specimens if I could expose the interior by breaking of cutting them. Fresh falls I could tell by eye.
Again-weathered meteorites look like terrestrial rocks. Magnets will narrow it down but aren't a confirmation. There are meteorwrongs- everywhere also.

Hi all:
Thanks for all the replies,And the video was neat it gives me an idea what to look and check for ,I have had a interest in amature astronomy since the
early 90'S. I built a 10" F/5 scope and have all the accessories,I have watched numerous meteror showers over the years watching several hundreds of them cross the skies.
Now that I'm into metal detecting I thought it would be really neat to find one. I don't think there are any known strewn field around ware I live but I do know they can be random
falls. They are everyware just got to find them.I do have acess to some large fields so this fall after the crops are out I will be walking and hunting them in all metal mode.
Again thanks.
