meter problem

XS2APRO W/550 METER. Meter won't stay consistent. yesterday it would'nt go over 350, so came back home, removed face plate and adjusted the inside pot so i could get a good 550 reading on quarter.
This morning it would only hit 350 again. After using for a half hour it finally went up to 550. The longer I used it, would have to keep adjusting it back down to 550 with the external knob.
 
One thing I would do is check all connections to make sure you have not a lose one or corroded connection. If you don't see any then look inside the meter to make sure there is no corrosion on any of the connections on the circuit board as when it is cold it may not give a good connection and as it warms up it gets better with the expansion of heat. I would also wiggle the cable too to see if there is not a lose wire giving a problem.
It sure sounds like a bad connection somewhere and I would suspect the connections first. Also by any chance to you have a Sun Ray Probe on it?? Sometime dirt will get in the toggle switch that switches from the coil to the probe and not make a good connection and your numbers on the meter will read quite a bit lower, so if you have a Sun Ray probe on it by pass it and see if that will help.

Condensation is something probable. Drives them nuts.

You may not see any moisture inside. Only takes a fine haze of sweat.
Try leaving the face assembly out overnight, or use a hair drier set on low for a few minutes to make sure it's dry, then put it back together if it works. Be careful not to cook it.

Thanks Rick and Art. I had thought about the temperature thing and took it back out this afternoon and after the temp armed up to the mid 50's, and it appeared to work. Will check the external connections tonight and try it in the morning when its still cool.
 
I have experienced this same problem on and off for about 3 years. Sometimes it drifts so far off that you can not calibrate the meter. I suspect humidity as the culprit because I live in the tropics. If I take the meter apart and let it air out in the sun, and then calibrate it, it seems to hold. Some folks on this forum have suggested encapsulating the circuit board, and others have suggested putting a small desiccant bag inside the meter housing. I find that drying it out every time it happens seems to work best for me.

do you hunt at the beach?? i dont know how it happened still but it happend to me in a similar manner ......I gave a good cleaning and drying to the conections in back and the board itself and it never was a problem again .......good luck .........
 
Yesterday morning when cool, turned it on and meter read 323. I put a tiny dab of dielectric grease on each meter pin terminal and it came up to 550. During the day it still appeared to creep up some and had to adjust it down a couple of times. This morning when cool, read 550. Will take the face plate off today and apply some heat to make sure its dry (appears to be) Does'nt have a Sun Ray probe on it, wish it did. probobly won't get out today to see if its working properly. appreciate the help you, Art and the others have given!!
 
It sounds like it may have helped a little and for the meter to need to be recalibrate a little is normal sometimes,but it should stay within a couple of numbers. As you notice the control is very touchy and it don't take much to change the calibration when you are setting it. I think by bumping it a little will make a difference, the temp (heat)will too I notice, but in most cases it will stay within 2 or 3 numbers of the original setting.

Yeah the pot is really easy to turn on my 550 meter. Even the cable brushing it can throw it off.

I did what was suggested by someone here and took a small rubber band and twisted it around the stem behind the knob. It gives just enough friction to keep the knob from being bumped, but still allows you to turn it easily.
 
Yes, Jane and I are avid beach hunters, and when we are back in the states we like to hunt the beaches around Santa Cruz, CA.
