Mexican Beach Detecting

Excuse the double post - leaving in the morning (5/21) for a beach resort near Puerto Morelos (22 miles south of Cancun). I had no intention of taking my F70 DD detector, but now am considering it. Any advice, cautions, issues or problems flying with a detector and getting it out of US into Mexico and back? If I do not take it I will probably stew for all 8 days - but I do not want to have it "lost" or stolen either. Obviously I will use common sense for detecting - awareness of surroundings - avoiding darkness and really isolated beaches. Any advice would be appreciated. Since I got the Fisher instead of the AT Pro I will be sticking to the sand. I understand this area is not nearly as eroded as the Cancun beaches that are constantly being torn away and replenished with dredged sand.

Thanks in advance

Ive seen this same question asked a lot in the past...just going from memory here, I hope somebody that really knows will chime in as you are packing tonight...I think there is no problem getting it there, back and detecting while you are there, no more trouble or risk as if you were hauling a set of golf clubs, or scuba gear...you are on Resort property right? That means you are a guest, and nobody should hassle you if you are discreet...key word as you know...discreet...If I had the chance to go, I'd take mine, or else I'd be sitting there for a week thinking about detecting that wondrous area, and thinking about all the gold and platinum right under my feet!...If I was going off resort to some private beaches, I might hire a trustworthy local driver/interpreter/bodyguard to haul me there super early before sunup and out of there shortly after..Life is one big adventure, and I hope you have a good one coming!

sounds like a blast i would hit the beaches where the american tourists go early in the morning to beat the crowds. i would ask the guys at the Beach and Water / Scuba Dive Detecting Forum on this site about any legal issues in mexico you dont want to get into trouble there good luck hh

We've been on two cruises to that area and both times saw guys detecting the beaches. Also have a friend that flies into Mexico with his detector and never had a problem. Good luck and have some fun. HH jim tn

I have been detecting in Mexico for about 9 years. I go down for about two months at a time. No problems. ALL beaches are open to the public. Stay low key. a good response to locals is Lo Siento No habla Espanol. Even though I speak pretty good Spanish. With the airlines pack however you want, keep your batteries out of your machine and out of your carry-on. Have fun........

First of all thanks to all for the responses and advice. Sorry to say that I decided not to take my detector - our checked bag was close on weight and carry on through international security seemed problematic..... and my wife was not thrilled with the idea since she knows how I become focused on detecting. Good news is we will be going back in January and I now have the "lay of the land". Private resort - lots of well-adorned people drinking a lot in the sand - and I did not see anybody detecting the week I was there. Sounds like a plan now - early morning - F70 11" DD - can't wait!!
