Hi Mud, I swing an AT Pro, but if my arm gets tired I'll break out the Fisher F2 or my old reliable Troy Shadow X2. I am really amazed by the F2 for an inexpensive detector. The house I grew up in still stands at the corner of Glendale and Rotterdam, but like you said, it's pretty dangerous there for white folks. Roger

Hi everyone, I'm new to the forum, and I am also new to metal detecting. Just got my first detector last month. Spending some time learning how to use it. Any people hunt in west michigan? I am close to the Grand Rapids area.

What rig did you get? Yeah theres plenty of West Mi hunters...some over on the Lakeshore like me, and some in central MI...We will all help you out...what do you think you'd like to hunt for? Gold, or Silver?
Seasons just now getting going, you can get some practice in and be ready for when you find the spot of a Lifetime!

Thanks for responding to my post. I up north at my inlaws right now, but I believe I got the cabela's bounty hunter treasure hunter. Does that sound familiar? I didn't get anything too expensive to begin with, I want to make sure this is something I want to get into. I'm extremely excited so far. Really looking forward to finding some places to hunt.

Well, are you intending to hunt sand beaches? or general dirt work? Sometimes it takes a while to figure that out, until then, just go general purpose and learn the language.
I used to hunt. trap and fish, but all other sports/hobbies take a back seat to detecting...If you get the addiction bad, thats all you will want to do....and just one good find will get you hooked! Heres a few of mine, the one with the anchor I found when I was brand new and fresh to the sport 4yrs ago, like 2 weeks after i got my first rig.....all found within 10 miles of the house here in the MKG area, along with no telling how many gold/plat rings...so it is indeed a sport that pays for itself...but you gotta be dedicated and out hunting hard...dont want to give you any false hopes, but this is what I experienced after getting good and hooked!

I'm not sure if I want to limit myself to just sand or just dirt. I was kind of planning on doing both. As of right now, I'm just trying to figure out how to use my machine. With the winter we had, I'm getting a later start than I would have liked. I'm not familiar with the term "MKG".

Say, when you get started, heres some advice from an old guy I met when I was new...probably the best advice I ever got..."dig 1000 pennys and dig 1000 pulltabs as fast as you can with nothing but a screwdriver"
What happens is, you get real good real fast regarding targets and retrieval methods and locations etc...it compresses the learning curve, so you can get better faster see? Also, you can read a bunch of these Forums and find a style of hunting that suits you, then pattern yourself after that posters successful habits! It would take a long time to master all the subsets of this sport, but clad/jewelry hunting is fast, fun and can be profitable.
The one poster I really tried to keep up with was a guy called "BH_Landstar" he was a clad hunting monster, but also got all sorts of old silver coins and gold jewelry as well....you can go and hunt the snowpiles like I am doing this am...they are full of trash, but also jewelry/coins, set your sens low...have fun! Looks like we are going to get hit by a big storm right at sun-up...

Was putting batteries back in the detectors yesterday afternoon, so I took the F2 out on the terrace by the street. Found 2 quarters and 2 pennies in pretty short order. Oldest coin was a 1967 penny. I just have to get out for a while today. Good hunting. Roger

Dude, I am from West Michigan. I hunt the beachs of Grand Haven/Holland (water too). I also have been given permission to almost 30 historical houses in the city of Grand Rapids which date back to 1850. I use an AT Pro and just got a Gold. I am learning that machine currently. As of now I favor the Pro for coins. However I want to try the Gold on the beach for jewelry. I am constantly trying to find other places to hunt. But I like the old houses. It seems the silver is deep in the old yards and I am trying to get the most out of the machines to reach the depths.
I believe there is alot of untouched areas in Michigan. However parks seems to not produce much for me.

I tried hunting in the water at Mona Lake. I found some junk jewelry but nothing much. It appeared as an old beach off of Wellsley Dr. and Randall. Any information on it as being old and productive?

Yeah, me and a buddy pretty much wiped out Mona, both that beach you mentioned and the old one straight across the lake to the North, as well as the outlet into the Big Lake, sheesh, I bet I've waded that channel from bridge to Lake 20 times..I even swam across the channel one morning and ransacked that Maranatha place! .cant say we found it all, but we found a lot when the water was down a few years back...its an awful place to hunt, the water gets real skunky in the summer, full of swimmers itch...so a fellow only gets a few good days in the Spring and Fall, when the water is cold...its a place to go when the waves on the Big Lake are too much to handle though, so its better than nothing.....you are right about the parks, they have been hammered to death for old silver by the old guys back in the 70's-80's...stay in touch, we need a big blow to move some sand and then it will be game on! I have a pretty decent milk run on the beaches in season, Bronson, Fatgirl, Catcove, MKG main, maybe up to Ducky, or down to GH or even down south of Holland at "1000steps", up early, hitting hard and fast...from GH to MKG generally...I'm normally done by 9am after 5+ miles of running the sand every morning..last July I figured I swung coil on over 100 miles of these beaches barefoot!...and that was just in July! its a workout! And theres some dang good hunters a guy has to try to outrun or outgun on these stretches as you know..success is all timing and weather of course...all this said, I hate every minute of this kind of work, and would rather hunt dirt on some private yard, near my car and wearing shoes.

i tried many times working the trough in Grand haven by the pier. about waist to chest deep. not great succeess. think i need to stay at inland water where items drop and stay.

Copperdave, where in GR are you hunting? I'm on the north west side near standale. I have been doing a little bit of dirt hunting, with very little luck. I seem to be getting hits, but can't seem to find the object in the whole that I dig. I bought a pinpointer hoping that will help, but I haven found any time ti give it a try yet.
