Mid February Thaw

We've had some unusually warm weather and the ground on some south facing hills has thawed. I was out for a walk and poked a stick in the ground and in it went. Had to take the explorer for a spin.
Unfortunately this ground was in a park that has been pounded heavily over the years. Finds are very few and far between.
Found a small coin spill... A real crappy signal first yielded a 1916 Buffalo in nice shape, then a 1908 V nickel right under that. About four inches away was a 1923 merc. The merc was in about vg-f condition so I imagined it must have been in circulation for at least 10-15 years. Wondering if it was lost with the nickels cause that would mean V-nickels were still circulating in the 40's?
Lots of iron in the area so the merc signal was real iffy. If I hadn't got the two nickels I wouldn't have checked the area so closely or heard/dug the dime signal. I bet we still missing alot of coins.
It was very nice to get out and play in the dirt.

Chris at least you were able to get out to see what it feels like, it is a start. You didnt do too bad either to start with,I hope I can do as good the first time out for the year.
Good Luck and hope to see some great find from you again this year.
Rick

Nope buffalo nickels were but the V was not, as kid never remember seeing one.
Funny about targets come in at the right angle, ability to discern an iffie has gotten many that have been missed..We have a smaller 100 year old park that was thought to be worked out of silver 10 years ago and old silver still is gotten from time to time with pounding and patience...
