Hi
Does anybody have any idea about what this is please?
<img src="http://www.fcooper.fsnet.co.uk/booby.JPG">
It is about 4.5 inches long (actual size in photo), made of brass, feels old and seems to have been hand made as it's a bit asymetrical. The end and the barrel may be two separate pieces but I haven't tried to separate them yet. Inside are lots of small lead shot, some of which have fallen out.
It was found deep on a beach where I have recently been finding stuff from about 1780 onwards, including military. My initial impression was that it was some sort of booby trap but it could be a cartridge for some sort of early breech loading weapon.

Fred

The end off a shot pouch, definitely an old one as it looks like the pouch was of leather or cloth which would be tied onto the spout below the flange you see in the middle of yours. Sort of looks like the one in the link although the bag shape could have been different.

I think this would have fit on a leather shot pouch which contained "bird shot", This was used with a "fowling pice" ( shot gun for birds) Not unusual if their were Officers in the area during the 1800s.

There has also been a long history of water fowling in the area. I will soak it in something to try to free it up.
Cheers
