I have a spot where I have taken out a ton of civil war relics and over 15 half dimes. It was a large campsite. There are several areas where I found a lot of buttons and a few coins, however those areas are full of square nails. Could have been some cabins or huts in this area. Anyway, I have slowed down and found a few more buttons but I can't go much slower. Any ideas on the settings I should use in this area to sniff out the coins which I know are there but the nails are masking them.

I'm assuming you are running in Ferrous and as little discrimination as possible. If in Auto sens try going to manual and bump up until close to unstable. Not much else makes a big difference. However, hitting the site from many angles and with different size coils can help. I'm totally convinced that in junky areas we leave lots of good targets in the ground because of target masking, but the explorer is probably going to find as much as can be found.

Thanks for the offer. I basically use the Minelab using the normal settings. I always bump up the sensitivity as far as I can. I usually do not make any other changes to the detector. So basically it is as if I hold down the on/off until the detector resets, then I turn up the sensitivity and then hunt. Any advice as to other settings would be very helpful. Thanks for reply.
It sounds quite opposite but after you pick through it with a smaller coil, come back over it with a larger than stock, like a 10 x14 Excellarator or a Sun Ray 12. Yes, in the thick trash, you will find more coins and relics, but you have to be in all metal for it to truly work. Lastly, hit the area at different times of soil moisture content, in the rain, day after, during a drought and even at different times of day/night if you have any power lines near by. I have one site, that during the summer, I can't hunt but four hours a night: from 2 am to 6 am, because that's when the electric air conditioner loads are lowest on the above power lines. I could hunt it during the day, but my depth goes to hell. The other thing you could do is to try using audio long, but just like all metal, it takes some serious concentration and time getting used to, but it's worth it. Good Luck
First, I would put the detector in Ferrous tones instead of Conductive tones. Hunt in Iron Mask with the first 1/8th of the screen blacked out and dig everything that gives a high pitched tone. Better would be iron mask wide open (all metal) and again, dig all the high tones. A gain of 7 rather than 8 will eliminate allot of the iron falsing (your larger square nails pretending to be silver). Lower your threshold to barely audible. Just hunting the area with less discrimination alone will produce allot more finds. If you are finding quality finds in factory settings at this site, you are going to be able to hunt this area for a long time. As your experience with the detector evolves, audio long, all metal, different size coils; so will your finds at this same site. My above post of trying a larger coil is probably to much right now for where your at, a smaller coil would be a better choice.

Just a suggestion......Try searching in FERROUS audio......and may I also suggest, not TOO slow a sweep.
Be bold, break the mould, and experiment with a slightly faster sweep than usual, then play around when you think you have a target.
I noticed that Chris(SsoCenW), also assumed you were using ferrous, so he to maybe thinking along that avenue of searching methods.
Why do I use FERROUS? Because here in the UK the interesting targets are usually either, or both THIN and / or LOW CONDUCTIVITY.
So in CONDUCTIVE audio mode such targets would have a less exciting lower tone. That psychologically temps your brain to pay less attention to them
in a congested target situation.
Now FERROUS audio gives those lower tones a relative higher pitch, which brings them more to you attention.
So give it a try....experiment on a gold ring in both COND.and FERR.audio modes and experience the point we're trying to make.
