MINELAB EXPLORER LIGHTWEIGHT COIL

Heh heh Elton,
I can't dance like Michael Jackson with a body like mine !!!

While the coil size on the Explorer increased .5", the coil size on the DFX increased 2.5".

Jeff & Maria---The weight on the new lightweight coil is listed at 528g or 18.6oz. I really like Ralph's (Sunray) products. I bought the S12 new and I used it quite a bit for awhile. It is a stable, sensitive coil for a larger coil (I liked it much better than the WOT 15). The problem I had with the S12 was that because of the lack of supports, both ears cracked on the bottom where they go into the housing (I don't think I'm THAT hard on coils). That's the problem with larger coils, they take so much pressure on those ears from swinging, etc. In that regard-I guess those cross pieces on the new lightweight would help that problem, but I've got some other questions about that coil that I'm wondering about. In any case, the reports from these upcoming tests are going to be very interesting. I still like my "club" FBS 1050 and I have the added benefit of being able to beat off attacking dogs with it!!! Take care, all my friends-Del

Del, I have found also that sometimes the Explorer lower shaft rubber washers do not fit snugly in between ears of the support brackets of some after market coils...
If you have to tighten the coil bolts too much to get support, you run the risk of pulling the "ears" of the coil so much that too much stress is applied to the top of the coil.
I personally don't like to see these "ears" move at all when I apply pressure to the washers via the coil bolt...
If this comes up for me, I insert one of the narrow "O"rings that Minelab used to use to tighten their aluminum shaft joints on their SD gold detectors.
I just pull out the standard Explorer coil washers, and place one of these "O"rings so that it encircles the lugs on the washer.
This extends the width of the washer by about 1/16", sometimes this has only got to be done on one side, you could do two sides if you needed to.

Thought I'd share this...:beers:

Thanks for that info Snowy, I'm sure going to remember that. That's gold you gave me, especially with the price of coils nowadays. I'll pay EXTRA attention to that from now on. My other coils seem to fit very snugly on the shaft/washers, I won't tighten ANY of the coils more than absolutely necessary. I repaired the 12" coil and it works fine but I had that problem with it. That coil does fit snugly on the shaft but those ears may be a little out of kilter now that it was repaired. They might have been looser on the shaft when it was new. That and the fact that larger coils by nature do cause more strain & pressure on the coil ears. Really appreciate your tip, my friend. Take care, Del
