Minelab Explorer SE

I've been a dump digging bottle collector since I was 12 years old and am now 50. I'm going to buy myself a metal detector sometime this week. I've been torn between the Explorer SE and the White's DFX. I like the sturdier look of the SE and I think it would be a more versatile detector but I'm afraid of the learning curve. Can anyone recommend a training video?

If you go to Ebay, just go to Consumer Electronics and click on that. Then go to Metal Detectors and when you get in to that just punch in Minelab Explorer into the Search Box and then you will see a Book and Video that you can either bid on or Buy Now. You can also click on the Minelab Banner at the top of this page and they should have Books and Videos listed that go into detail about the Unit. That is if you decide to get an Explorer SE. If you decide to, Congrat's. The Explorer SE will find what White's Detectors leave behind. Hope you find what you are looking for and Good Luck and HH.

THANK YOU!!!! VERY VERY MUCH !!!

I hope you find what you are looking for and I hope you have a lot of fun in this Hobby of Metal Detecting. It should go great with your Bottle Digging Hobby and I wish you the best of luck. :detecting:

I'm starting to hear some rumblings about problems with the SE. Have you heard of any specifically?

Not to worry though. If there is a problem with the SE, Minelab will fix it free of charge. So I wouldn't put too much thought into it DukeOBass!

I learned on a white's XLT years ago. Graduated to a DFX, Explorer, and a X terra 70. As James said the Explorer found things the DFX passed over. I did a few experiments with my three detectors, not in a test gerden but actual locations. The results were First place: Explorer, Second place Xterra, Third place DFX. I have since sold the DFX. It is a good machine but my feelings it has programs that you will never use, and is not as powerful as the Explorer.
Don't worry about the learning curve on the SE, just turn it on and go, but go SLOW. That's the key to it's ability to find good targets. If you like moving along faster, the X Terra is great. The problem is there are no smaller coils for trashy areas. It's a great detector for disturbed ground, like recently plowed fields.

Thank you! I really appreciate your help!

I have both the DFX and Explorer XS. I like the DFX for cellar holes and trashy sites. I use a 4x6 Elliptical coil in these spots and it really does separate well. Also on the DFX you can adjust the Recovery Speed which quickens the response time between targets. There are a few other settings for iron and trash. I like the XS in fields and "worked out" sites as it definately gives me a few more inches in depth. But the weight and ergonomics of that machine kill my elbow, even with the 8" coil. I can't vouch for the SE, but I heard it was marginally better in trash than the XS or II. The DFX is better balanced and is a rugged unit. So I guess what it boils down to is the type of hunting you do. Hope my 2 cents helped. Ron
