Minelab manufacturing move

Just reading at another site that Minelab is moving its manufacturing from Ireland to Malyasia. Sure hope the quality remains the same. What does everyone else think will happen?

Steve

Hard to say, probably cheaper labor, they are cutting their costs, I'm wondering if they will pass the savings on to their customers.

Fisher and Whites are looking better every day. At least its good o USA and you can put your hands on them. Seems new management is more about the buck and we can buy it or not at their prices. Starting to look like a throw away company. Where our used detectors are going to decline even faster than they do already.

Why don't we just give them all our technology and be done with it. Within short order Minelab will find Asian knockoffs of there detectors.

Don't the Irish need the work?

I will have to second what Dew said, sadly.

Wow ... Dummy Me always thought they were made in AUSTRALIA.

The news about Minelab not repairing any detector 10 years or older are starting to make some sense.

Yep ... the Chinese knock off copys are right around the corner.

They moved a lot of their maintance to Malyasia. Listening to a union official (representing QANTAS engineers)on the radio a few weeks back, they have started to reverse that desision (as it seemed that) the quality of workmanship wasn't up to scratch.

Here is the article from Oz:

The name of the company that will be doing the manufacturing is Plexus and it's headquarters are in Neenah, WI. Here is a link to their operational locations:

They do a lot of Mil-Spec & Aerospace manufacturing so one would assume they know which end of a soldering iron to hold. They also do manufacturing for companies like Coca-Cola, so if one's a Pepsi man I guess you could have something to complain about.

In a couple of years you'll be able to buy a Chinese knock-off E-Trac in Walmart for $19.99!

Sad to see yet another manufacturing move to Asia - well at least it wasn't China.

You are right dew seems like it is all about the bottom line for minelab now and the customers are going to suffer. From my dealings with them seems that they do not care what we think.

Im just waiting for the time i call for repair and get the old.... HI MY NAME IS BOB HOW MAY I HELP YOU from someone in India. When that happens i wont care that Minelab was number one. That gets so frustrating everytime i call places like Dell. Its just another way to make you just give up on their service. Seems like a great company got gobbled up and is now being pieced out with their experts being let go and manufacturing put on a convayor belt. I hope im wrong... or ill have to start buying up SE's for parts.

I agree with you jason.Imo They don't care anything about there customers. the only support I got was when i bought the detector.I will not be buying another product from minelab.

I have an SE Pro with tons of accessories I will dump for a reasonable price. PM me anyone who is interested....E-Trac with the same. Time for me to go to the competition, I've seen enough of these jokers. They make the company in "Office Space" and "Dilbert" seem with it.

Nope they don't. I'm dumping them and going elsewhere. I know they don't care and neither do I. I just wish I hadn't bought their stuff to start with. I sure won't buy anymore of it. And I'm selling what I do have.....gonna look at Fisher now. Bye Minelab.

This is my first pm and maybe my last? I had used garret master hunter ADS's before I bought a Minelab. They were made like aluminum tanks back in the 70's thru the 80's now, to reduce costs, they're plastic. They found many coins, relics, rings and a lot of junk but the beach detecting just wasn't there. I bought an Explorer XS in 2000 it worked great on beaches, relic hunting, coin shooting and finding junk. It broke two weeks ago after 8+ years. Sent it to minelab Las Vegas got a reply 2 days later with a reasonable cost estimate for the repair. They didn't repair the circuit boards but replaced them. Will have my detector back in less than10 days. My wife called Ron Johnson, Service Tech, he was polite, explained in none tech terms what had been done. Good people.
My point is, my detector has served me well, lasted 9 years and will still find many more targets and Minelab stood behind their product with excellent support. I'll keep using my XS till it gives up the ghost. They still have the best detector for my hunting style and so what if the circuit boards are made by a good company in malyasia or ireland if it finds what you are looking for what's the problem.

I took my new Explorer SE to a football field (SAT) after I got it years ago and did not find much.
Next day (SUN) I took it to a beach and found a gold ring.
From that experience I learned:
1. Explorers are not good coin finders at football fields on Saturday.
2. They are good for finding gold rings on a beach but only on Sundays.
I need to do some more testing to see how it works on the other days of the week.

Had they refused to fix it last time because it was too old would you still be happy about it?
Well ... you got one more year before they will not repair it anymore.
If you plan on selling it you better do it now cause the price will drop like a rock when that happens.

But you are right ... while they are working ... they are good machines ... on certain days of the week.
