I know that a lot of people on this forum have been waiting and waiting for their Minelabs to be repaired, but I'm happy to say that I'm not one of them. I lucked out, big time!
With a two week trip planned to Virginia Beach to visit my brother (Mike in Virginia Beach) I decided it was FINALLY time to send my long broken Excal in for repair. (It's still under warranty.) I wrote a pleasant, detailed letter explaining what the problem was and sent it three day air/insured. Cost: $39+. Due to what I've been reading on the forums about long turnaround times, I worried that the repair would not be done in time, so once I sent that one off, I decided to go ahead and order a new Excal II from Kellyco, which I had sent directly to Mike in Va Bch. There, I was covered for my trip. He's got it and is "test driving it" for me....
Minelab received my broken Excal on Thursday, June 12. I called on Friday and spoke with Robert, who was already working on it. Robert, who was very pleasant to deal with, expedited it for me. He said he appreciated that my letter spelled out exactly what appeared to be wrong with it and because I asked for it to be returned to me ASAP, he wanted to do what he could to help me. (Note to other Minelab owners: don't just write: "Broken...repair it." In this case, giving details helped to move things along.) Robert replaced the cord (which had a crack in it as expected), replaced the coil and a cracked battery end cap, AND even replaced the DECAL on the body of the Excal that I damaged while trying to clean it with rubbing alcohol in preparation for it's trip to Minelab. WOW! What service! He shipped it out on Monday June 16 three day air to me, at no charge, because I was concerned that 5-7 day ground would just miss me, since I'm leaving on Wednesday morning, June 25. I got it via UPS this afternoon (Thursday, June 19) and it looks as good as new. I can't wait to try it out this weekend, although I won't have as much time to hunt this weekend as I had hoped, due to work.
All year I've been using my Fisher CZ70, so it will be nice to have the Excal back. I'll have to relearn it... it's been so long since I used one. I'm looking forward to seeing how it works, compared to the Fisher.
Wish me luck!
