Minelab stock headphones inop.

My headphones wheat completely out yesterday. For the last 6 hunts they were cutting in and out . I would lose one speaker from time to time then yesterday both cut in and out and now I plug them in and all I get is the outer speaker. So now all I have is ear warmers. Took them apart last night and found no lose connections but sure looks like cheap wiring and solder post.

Any advice w8old be greatly appreciated.

I have not been using the wireless. I also can't get any thing buy jiggling the connector, it's just dead.
I'm not happy with after spending 3000.00 dollars in top of line equipment. That 8 months later the maintenance bills start nicking and dimming me already. They say the best are 160 bucks. That's allot of quarters to dig.

Call Minelab. They'll send you new headphones if they're under warranty.

Yup, no need to even write up and complain about them, it happens. Minelab will fix them or send you a new pair.

Minelab will send you a new pair without question. A couple of my buddies are having the same issue. I'm on my second pair and they are starting to cut out already. I know a dealer that has brought this to their attention, but....

The wire at the plug is not adhered good to the plug. If the wire will move back and forth . You need to glue it . DO it before the wire breaks.

Consider it an opportunity to buy a better set of headphones; the OEM are not very good compared to many of the others available. Might even want to try a good set of earbuds; I find them much more comfortable in the warmer weather.

Thanks for all the help and input everyone. I will call Monday and see if they will send me out some new ones

I think it is the plug but I can't get it open to check.

I think next set I will beef up the plug area with some good rubberized electrical tape.

Update;

Just like you guys said they are sending out a new set . I will keep the old for spare parts .

I think they were not designed to be plunged right into detector which stretches the cable , so I think I will go ahead and tri the wireless module in addition to beefing up the connection areas.

I never plug my headphone directly into the metal detector no matter what brands, instead I use one of those 6 feet coiled extension that stretch out to about 12 feet. I mount the female jack of the extension cable to the rear of tool belt and then plug male into the metal detector itself. I plug headphone into the female jack..

It allow me to stand and dig a nice plug in a circle without my headphone being stretched or knocked off my head. It give me a whole lot freedom but the con is you will have a slight heavy coiled cable to deal with which loop from your belt to your metal detector while your detecting. It does take some time getting used to it.

That's interesting Bill .

Where would one get this extension you speak of.

I brought mine over 15 some years ago at Radio Shack but with Bluetooth and wireless now days, it harder to find a coiled extension cables for headphone. Coiled cable you find now days are for guitars but those cables are male to male and you would want male to female.

Gone those 70's where teenager have those oversize headphone and long coiled extension plugged into their HiFI 8 deck track stereo listening to their music at the other side of the living room in their bean bag chair while their daddy complains how many time he tripped over the damn cable. :)

You still probably can find them on Ebay etc. try doing a search on Ebay under "1/4 extension coil" or "headphone extension" and I am sure you will get some hits. I think mine is 12 or 15 feet or 5m I can't remember exactly but it was a long time ago and I still have the same cable.

Now with my new Bluetooth transmitter and the CTX wireless module, I probably won't be using it anymore unless my transmitter died while hunting but I will always have it in my car with as a backup when I go detecting.

Update :

I received these in the mail minutes ago.

What do you guys think about this set, and how should I proceed using these? Any tips or cautions I should use? Any modds I should make? They are the waterproof and they look more heavy duty.

I thought your issue was with the stock Koss land headphones. Those are the waterproof ones that you have to screw into the detector.

Yes Surfman my issue is with the stock dry headphones.

I thought at first they were out so they just sent me a better set, but these are pretty much useless for me. I can't even use the wireless.

What do I do now. I went all weekend beeping and squeaking around the parks. Drives dogs insane and attracts children.

One young lady wanted to help so I handed her a root/ mudball and told her to dig the coin out of it. 20 seconds later she says that's not a coin. Here the little stinker dug out a small silver ring that fit her finger just right.

Well I didn't have to let her have it but of coarse I did anyway.

Minelab sent me a pair of the Koss stock when my first set failed and now after about 50 hours of use (if that) the new pair now cuts out when I set the detector down to dig every target. If the CTX was truly wireless I wouldn't use them at all but I guess I'm calling Minelab back today and see what happens.

Coondog, call Minelab and get it straightened out. They obviously sent you the wrong pair. ???? Call them or buy a better set. I got the Sun Rays when I got mine. Don't like the Koss.

ML, the CTX is wireless when using the WM10. Plug the Koss into it. Much better than plugged into the detector and a lot less stress on the headphone cable. It's strange to me that a lot of people don't use the wireless module.

I feel Minelab uses a basic headphones just so you have a set as they leave the customer get the set they want, but these Koss will get you by for a short time. If they decided to include a good set like the Sun Ray Pro Gold or the Detector Pros they would have to charge more for the detector and these may not be the ones you want, this way they give you a basic set and lets you get the ones you want.
On all the Explorers, E-Trac or the CTX 3030 I haven't seen a set of the Koss they put in the box last very long at all as I don't think they are made to last long, just to get you by until you decide the ones you want to buy. I feel most that the big store in FL give you free with their new detectors are the same way as they say it is a $100 retail set of headphones, but are basic headphones most can buy for around $20 just to get you by.

That's my 2 cent worth anyway.

Rick

I feel the same way Rick. I actually used the stock Koss for just over three years with my Explorer Se. Never gave me any trouble. New owner is still using them. I do like the Pro Golds so much better.

Thanks guys for advice and recommendations.

I called them today I am sending these back and also my propointer for replacement, propointer acts up quit often and now the power button is sticking off and on.

I hope they fire the manufacturer of the headphones and get that resolved.

I am guilty of not using the wireless module but will give it a try.
