a sweet SLQ WITH a date. FINALLY!
What a great day..and I'm glad a hunting buddy was there with me.
I started out by finding my DEEPEST silver dime ever...a true 11" down 1892 Barber dime.:super: Dang..missed a seated by one year.
A lot of you may have found deeper coins...but for me..in this area and soil...10" has been my deepest until now. This baby was a true 11" deep and I measured it with my lesche. It was 1/2" from the very tip top of the orange handle.
When I dug the hole...and kept going...I thought there was no way it could be a coin. Even when I ran the probe and it still sang...I kept thinking there was no possible way a little coin could be this deep and still be picked up by the SE. I was shocked and to be honest...it means just as much as the capped bust dime I just dug a couple of days ago. I have never hit an 11" silver dime until now.:super:
We plugged along a while longer and popped out a few wheaties...then i hit the washington quarter at 9" down.
A few minutes later..a guy stopped to chat with and gave permission to hunt another site. I was gone within 5 minutes!
I arrived at the site and I saw right where I wanted to start searching. I no more than turned on the SE and moved maybe 3 feet and hit the sweet Barber quarter.:clapping: My buddy was about 30 feet away so I called him over to see it come out of the ground.
He then started to walk back to his spot...but before he could get 10 feet away. I yelled..."another deep silver hit..and it's a screamer".
He turned around and headed back to see what it was going to be. The target was less than 10" away from the Barber hit...and it was a silver screamer sound...yippee.
I dug a deep plug and started to remove some of the dirt when I thought I saw a silver rim. I said so to my buddy and his face lit up...but then I saw nothing..so I thought it was a mistake. By this time he is 3/4 way in the hole:crylol: and in my way...ha ha.:crylol: I start to move some more dirt and Phil says "holy sh##...I see silver". All of a sudden...there's FOUR hands in the hole instead of two:rofl: :bouncy:
He started to mumble some gibberish...and starts using both hands like a dog looking for a bone.:super: We were like 2 kids with 2 stupid grins on our faces as the dirt was flyin'.:bouncy: He uncovered it thank goodness..cause' he was about to scrape holes in my hands.:crylol: I told him to go ahead and pop it out of the clod to see what it was...like I had a choice.:crylol: He then said it looked lt was a slq...so I asked him to set it in my hand so I could check it myself since I've never found one with a date. He said from seeing the back of it...he thought it would be nice. When I turned it over my face lit up and we started high fiving each other. FINALLY a BLAZER with a 1920 date that looked like it was dropped last week.:surprised:
He then reminded me I was a seated quarter away from the quarter grand slam...but it wasn't to be:shrug:.
Geez...I've found some nice coins over the last couple of years...but in the last 30 years...NO dated slq until now. This was one of the most memorable hunts I have ever had...just a couple of days after finding the bust dime...and it would have been nearly meaningless if a friend wasn't there to share in the fun. I'm glad he has an understanding wife:super:. My girlfriend is pretty cool about me hunting as well. Thanks for viewing the post and sharing my fun.

Very, very nice SLQ Bryce and in beautiful condition............:surprised: Like a lot of buffalo nickels you hardly find one with a date. I guess I should feel lucky to have found two SLQ and both had readable dates; 26 and 29. Again, great finds Bryce. HH.

Eddie

Congrats on the very nice SLQ with a date! The seated quarter would have been a toughie for the grand slam - not sure if I've ever heard of anyone ever getting a quarter GS  Funny how things go, I found my first SLQ with a date in my first year detecting and my first seated quarter last year, but that darn Barber q still eludes me.

I think Mike Moutry might have, anyone else.

Nice finds Bryce. Both SLQs and seated are hard to find. Be pretty cool to make that slam.

I can't imagine anybody doing it hunting public grounds like I do. Just finding a silver quarter at all is a feat in itself.

For the people that are better at asking permission than I am then I would imagine that it could be done if all of the stars were aligned for them that day.

As for Moutray, what hasn't he found? haha

WTG Buddy! That Standing Liberty Quarter is sure a looker and I am glad you finally found 1 with a Date on it. You know it would happen sooner of later and of course, it would be a Beauty like the one you found. Congrats on the Barber Quarter and the Silver Quarter as well. That's an amazing hunt and you well deserve it for the little time you have to detect with work and all. Congrats also on that Ultra Deep Barber Dime! Just goes to show that some Targets can really Surprise You at Super Depths, especially when it's a Coin. By the way, what Coil were you using at the time? Continued Success, Good Luck and HH to you Bryce!:clapping::thumbup:

I've actually found a few of them...just not with a date on them until now.
As for coils...I am doing some experimenting with the 1050...the SEF...the 10 x 14...and Phils' wife's pro coil. So most of the finds are from different coils.
Good luck on your next hunt buddy.

You guys flatter me so... Actually I've never done a quarter slam... I've had 3 different a couple times. GOLDDIGGER got a quarter slam a few years back, and I was there in person to witness it..... I actually watched him dig a seated quarter in the dark for his quarter slam. We had spent all day hitting a few sites in southern Illinois and stopped by one last spot on the way back home. It was dark out and he had a real sweet deep quarter hit, he dug it out of the hole and without looking at it - handed it to me and told me to "Please make it a Seated" for his slam... Nice guy that I am, I obliged! That was an unforgettable day! HH, Mike.
