I noticed that the rechargeable NIMH battery stick is 9.6 v and the AAA stick is 12v (8 x 1.5) , can NIMH batteries be used in the 12 pack? thanx

Just make it worth the trouble by using high rated nimhs, they are available up 3000 mAh rating or maybe better than that now, and they should run your Explorer ALL DAY without any problems.
Of course they're only 1.2 volts compared to a alkaline at 1.5 but the voltage is controlled by a internal regulator anyway and you will still get long battery life until they drop below 1/2 way on the meter and then fall rapidly.

To add to Mike post, also make sure you get a GOOD charger or the rechargeable wont last as long. If you have the SE manual there is a pretty good illistration showing verious batterys and their approximate hours when used. You will notice your slimline dropping off much faster than the AA's... until about half way then they tend to be about the same. When you first get your slimline what ive found works best is the first couple of times use it until it really needs rechargeing... dont just put it on the charger when you get home. It seems to hold a longer charge. Those slimlines say 9V, but i think if fully charged they start out at 11V before declining. Some people dont like to hunt with a battery less than half full, but like Mike said there is an internal regulator.

the best ones I have used so far are the duracell pro 2650 mah.. get at least 12 hours out of a charge.. still have juice left, but I usually pop in my spare at 1/4 full.. a good smart charger is best.. I use Sunrays cradle with my old Sunray charger.. too bad they dont make the charger any more
