modified upper shaft for e-trac

Hi all, I have a question on the e-trac upper shaft, If I understand correctly when you install a sun ray probe you have to get a upper shaft that is modified so your coil cable can be run on the outside of the shaft instead of in it right? If so can you buy the modified upper shaft by itself? The reason I'm asking is I bought a x-5 sun ray coil and it seems like it's going to be a pain trying to snake it through the upper shaft every time I want to change coils. I plan on purchasing a extra lower shaft to leave right on the extra coil. Also wheres the best place to buy a modified upper shaft if you can buy them? Also does anybody else do this for the same reason? Thanks and HH (if you can Brrrrrr.)

I hope I'm reading your question right. With the X-1 you leave the upper shaft with the probe on the detector. Your coil stays "outside" on the lower shaft and screws into the box on the side of the upper shaft. If you want to change coils you just unscrew the coil chord from the X-1 box and unscrew the coil and replace with a different coil, then screw your chord back onto you X-1. Some people purchase a new lower shaft so they don't have to take the bolt and wingnut off their lower shaft to change the coils...just switch shafts with coils mounted.

Hi all I found out after I posted how the sun ray probe works. I did not know the cable that comes from the sun ray control box and goes to the e-trac's control box still goes through the upper shaft. I think if I do not get a probe in the near future I will do like carcus did and get both rods for my other coil.

I bought an old white upper rod
( probably for explorer II) and mounted the probe to it.Under neath the probe i drummeled a hole to slide the end of the coil through so i dont have it wound around the shaft.I prefer this better then stretchin out the wire when it is wound around the shaft.

The thing to do is when you get your X-1 Sunray Probe get it already mounted on a shaft otherwise you need to send in your shaft to have it mounted. Having your orignal shaft as it came might come in hand if you ever have to send either the probe or the detector in for service. If you get a coil it is very handy but not absolutely neccesary to have an extra lower shaft, with the coil mounted on your extra shaft it makes switching coils very easy that way if your out hunting and want to change it only takes a minute to do so. I generally carry my Sunray X8 mounted on the extra shaft with me and leave it in the car, that way I can change it if the spot I'm hunting requires it.
