Monday Evening Hunt Nets Eclectic Mix

Howdy,

Well, it was just way too darn nice this evening not to go out and at least try for a few more goodies. So I manage to slip out after dinner until sunset, which gave me nearly two hours of pure relaxation.

I put the Pro coil back on, and headed for a place where I've found one Barber dime and one Indian Head, and a handful of Wheats using the 8x6 SEF. I wanted to see what I might root out with some added depth. With the recent rains we've been getting, I don't think I could make the soil conditions any more perfect if I tried. Just like butter, and plugs neatly held together without being muddy at all, and moist down several inches. Wow. I was running sensitivity at 26-28 mostly too.

I searched an area in lines, walking about three down and three back, with each line being maybe 20 yards long. My first find was an old ring that says 'I am Lutheran' on the back. I followed that by a Wheat. Later I got a low tone, and recovered what I thought might be play money, but turned out to be an amusement token (old one). Then I got another amusement token that had a fairly high tone (also an older style).

I was just listening for anything repeatable and watching the depth gauge. I wanted at least six inches showing for this site. Got another low tone, but with a bit of warble. I flipped over to the digital screen, and saw a 07 07 reading. It had pretty good depth, so I decided to see what it was. Turned out to be a Buffalo Nickel! First one this year. I've mainly been cherry picking high tones this year, but at this site, with the age, it's all about depth, so I go after more.

Finished up with another Wheat and packed it in.

One Wheat turned out to be a 1909, but no VDB, no S. The obverse unfortunately is really pitted badly, although the back isn't too bad (full wheat ears too).

The Buffalo has a nice readable date, 1916-D. But it has the awful crud on it. Would have been a nice one otherwise.

So all in all, a very nice hunt for the evening. No silver, but the Buff was nice to find (I had one 8 inch deep high chirpy signal that taunted me, but turned out to be a clad quarter! Only clad of the night).

Looks like a good evening to me...those buffalos are few and far between, at least for me.
Congrats!

Nice finds DirtFlipper. That BN is nice. I clean mine up with a fine wire brush. It brings the original tone back. Happy Hunting.

Great Republic.... ive found a very light steal wool then bar tenders powder is fantastic as well. Ive tried it all i think. The problem with certain cleaners or even cleaning is if you dont do ti right it leaves a purple unnatural color to them. So you might as well have left them red. Those nickels are there but the deeper they are the more they just seem to hit like rust or targets you normally wouldnt dig.

Nice finds DirtFlipper. Don't you just love those 8" deep "chirpers" that turn out to be clad or a stinkin' Lincoln:biggrin:
Nice mix of goodies...and the ring is pretty cool too.

Nice stuff! I agree with Christopher - Ohio, I've had great results cleaning nickels with the ketchup and plastic bag. Soak over night and most corrosion will come off with a rinse and soft toothbrush (just make sureyou rinse the brush well before you brush your teeth next time-lol). The nickel will look like new.

OK, the nickel is soaking in ketchup now.... I'll post an update later as to how it turns out. I figure that's the least intrusive method, so will start there.

Man, I gotta say given the age of the stuff I was finding there, and at that depth, I was pretty stoked! It was the last signal of the evening, getting pretty dark, and the mosquitoes were swarming. I was pretty happy with what I had found, but a nice old silver would have about bowled me over. Expecting that silver rim to appear and finding a clad quarter (it was a 1967) was quite the surprise! No worries though, I barely covered the place so far.

That sounds like a great site...and you have barely scratched the surface.

Here's to popping some more sweet deepies out:cheers:

Have fun...and keep us posted on whatever additional goodies you uncover.

Nice digs, DF -- and you ain't a kidding about the perfect soil conditions here! Here's to hoping for adequate "maintenance" rain showers for the rest of the season.

Jeff
