[attachment 188300 SAM_0313.JPG] Went to area that has coke ash or fly ash pea gravel and iron could not get a steady threshold even with power down to seven in manual and auto did noise cancel.Does there need to be a threshold in order for it to detect coins? It seems that it would still finds coins even with the threshold cut out.I was surprised at what i found.I was using smart find and iron mode on and off.The threshold would cut out for three or four swing and come back on and off,i know there has to be a lot of iron there, really hard to hunt with my other machine. In order for me to keep a steady threshold ,i would have to move or swing as almost slow motion.I was using explorer xs and explorer 2.Coils 8 inch minelab and 10.5 minelab stock.Actuall in order to keep a steady threshold the coil would have to be 3 to 4 inches off ground.Stil found those coins and this area is pounded and hard to hunt.Is the minelab a noisy machine?Meaning it was hitting like iron hit half hit in some areas then it would go quite.Even if i was in a noisy area it would still sing if it found a coin.Wasn't getting a lot of depth surface to about 4 or 5 inches.Try turning power up a few times but didn't make it any better. Both machine acted about the same .Lot of question cant really compare it to my other machines because it is completely different.Still trying to figure it out going to take a while.i have found some junk deep in my yard but no deep coins.Though i have a few buried and it hit them hard those are 7 to 8 inches and couple deeper.Usure if i have setting correct, they are used machine i set them back to factory by holding power button till i herd reset noise.Iam use to running a xlt mxt idx ace 250 fisher id excell and ran a bounty hunter before have a lot of coils been hunting about 15 years.not use to pinpoint on minelab had to use the ace 250 with sniper coil to try and find the spot.Tried heal to toe walk out crossing lines tried walking in with toe of coil seemed a little better today then you seem to lose it and then figure it out again.Well thanks for any tips or help. Minelab 101 for me i have two books on them one is Andy sabisch mastering the explorer.

when im in heavy iron losing theshold i go to all metall ferrous sounds low burbs are iron high tones the good stuff not fo every body or if new to explorers but it does work also you are right about the very slow sweep speed unlike the fast sweep of the xlt my lasy detector a nice detector also but not a explorer by a long shot

Thanks for the reply . I have been reading about ferrous as soon as snow melts again i will try it.Even though it was losing threshold i was still finding coins.I like the machine and i have dug deep junk, just no coins deep yet.Trying to understand machine. It seems noisy sometime other times quite.I mean how slow can you go i dont really know if iam going to slow, but from reading some post it seems you can almost crawl and pick up deep coins.Because of weather i really haven't been able to use it for a couple days straight .Like using iron mode seem to get more targets that way,but have to remember the tones for the coins.Getting a little better with pinpointing. Thanks for advice i will try the ferrous next time out. Will probably have a lot of questions after i run it for a few days.

yes you do learn each and every time out with this unit thats half the fun of it youll pick up the tones as you go get more goodies less junk this is one sweet detector you will grow with it

ou are going to find shallow coins since the detector uses size to determine targets. a good many coins may be larger than the piece of deep or shallow iron nulling your machine. Also, the harmonics are sent constantly and recovers quicker than you may thing allowing you to catch those coins. You can kind of watch your smartscreen to set your sensitivity in those areas... if its not moving reduce the sensitivity till it does. Just use a slow paint brush movement and you should find some of those masked coins.

the Explorer will still hit stuff in a null so no need right now for you to
change to ferrous tones.
Sounds to me you are doing ok, for sure the Explorer is different than
any other detector, some learn it quick and some it takes more time.
Hey maybe you should give up learning the Explorer, that way less
competition for me....kidding aside, it sounds like you are doing ok
at this point, just take your time and learn as much as you can
everytime you got out and use it, with the Explorer, patience is
the key.

Thanks for all the answer. No lol i will not give up on the explorer have to find more this season than my brother in law Tim Dude he uses a xlt .Just waiting again for the snow to melt soon so i can run it for a couple of days.Still waiting for 6 inch ex coil on back order for over a month.Found a few more coin zips to add to my emulator.Wheels are spinning with the breaks on snow snow go away.Hoping to start to find deeper coins or sliver this year. Thanks for all the advice it will be well taken. Will be back with more questions as soon as i run it a while thanks again.

I received my Explorer SE Pro in January and have been actively hunting with it ever since. I've been putting in lots of hunts, time and patience with it and have been lurking on the boards and absorbing everything I can to improve my skills. Going out again this morning to an old site I've had my eye on and I just *feel* silver out there... Will keep at it and never stop learning - that seems to be the thing with metal detecting. I just ordered an Excaliber II for ocean and freshwater work too - want to see what water hunting can offer ;>) Thanks to all who share so much information so willingly here, it has helped me immensely...

I had my first experience with outside interference yesterday. Was going along, and the Explorer started sounding off like R2D2. I looked up and realized I was close to a power pole with a bunch of electrical boxes at about eye level. Turned around and went the other way...lol.

I went to my practice lot near my house yesterday and picked-up a four wheat coin-spill in the same hole as a rusty square nail....impressive...and I am seeing more and more that coins do have a different sound from just about everything else I've dug-up. And I cleared a hurdle too...I know where pennies land in Smartfind.

Got another inch of snow last night
