Hello again everyone and hope you all have been finding some good stuff lately. Back with another day's worth of finds so let's get to it.
Saturday Morning, Tim and I headed out again without Dale to see if Tim could turn his luck around and see if he would be the lucky one with the majority of the Silver this time out. Dale had to stay home since he had a Softball Game to play Sunday and he didn't want to be stiff the next day....too bad really....he missed out on some nice finds again.
The first stop Tim and I did was at a small town. We drove over to check out an old school which was 2 stories and very large that we seen in the distance. It was in rough shape and it looked like private property. We seen a fellow over by the ball diamond so Tim stopped and chatted with the guy about who owned the school and where the old ball diamond was located. The guy Tim was talking to was the owner of the school and he denied us permission to hunt the school yard since he said it had already been detected many times in the past and he was thinking about purchasing a metal detector himself and going through the yard himself. He did mention to Tim where the old ball diamond sat and it was directly south of the school and it was owned by the city, just where I had thought it sat when driving by an empty lot. So we headed back and started our day at this ball diamond.
The ball diamond was pretty dead...as if fill had been added or possibly someone had already pounded it because Tim and I couldn't find even a Wheat Penny where the diamond supposedly sat. There was another section of lot connected to this to the east so I started heading that direction. I looked up and Tim had the same thing in mind since he was already headed that direction. Tim started doing some digging about middle of the lot near an old sidewalk that was still present. I started detecting the other side of the sidewalk since I didn't want to be left out if there were old coins near it. I got about 3/4th's the way down the sidewalk when I got a good loud 28-30 on Digital that showed at least 6"-8" Deep. I dug a plug thinking another piece of junk since I had already recovered a few of these earlier along the sidewalk but was pleasantly surprised when I seen Silver. It turned out to be a Silver Quarter and my first keeper of the day. I then jumped across the sidewalk where Tim was detecting and started working that area since Tim seemed to be digging a lot on this side. I dug a few Wheats and then we both decided to head to another location. Tim only came up with a few Wheats also. So far, I was the first to get Silver for the day and a bigger one at that.
Site 2 was the Park we had been at last weekend where I found 9 Silver at. Tim wanted to try and locate where the old ball diamond sat and I had a good idea where it was. We detected an open grassy field for a bit and I was the only one to come away with anything of interest. 1 Wheatie! We then headed into the Park itself and went back to where I thought it may have been. The grass was starting to get tall so we had to suffer a bit with depth since the coil was off of the ground a good 4"-6" in most of the area. Most of the signals we got here were choppy at best. It was hard to distinguish the signals from iron falses due to loss of detection depth. We hunted this for awhile with me coming up with a Barber Dime, 2 Merc's, and a few Wheats. I also found an Old Watch here and a long piece of metal that looked like it came apart. Later, I found out it was a Nail File inside which I thought was pretty neat. Tim found a Merc and a few Wheats also but he scored well with 7 Tokens, all of the same merchant but one only had what town they were from.
I then decided to head back into that Park Area itself and see if I couldn't find more keepers here since the grass wasn't so tall and the signals came in better. We then hunted this for a few hours then left to site 3. We both found more keepers, Tim finding another Merc, a McCormick Medallion, and a few more Wheats. I retrieved a V-Nickel, a few more Wheats, another Silver Quarter, and a few more Merc's which brings my total of Silver up to 10 for the day, and it was about 4:00pm in the Afternoon and we had a few hours to hunt yet. Tim was off to a bad start with Silver again and he only had 2 but that would change before we stopped hunting for the day.
Site 3 was the site of an Old Fairgrounds we had gone to a number of times last year. Tim didn't much like this site since it seemed like he never could find much here but I always managed to pull some nice stuff from it. We tried where there once was a football field for a bit. I found 2 Wheats, a Rosie and a Merc here. I then walked further out and found an Indian Head. Tim only found 2 Wheats so we headed to another location trying to find one that would produce Silver for Tim and end the day in an up swing. We only hunted this for about 45 minutes I would say so there is a few things left if one returns and works it good.
Site 4 and 5 were a total bust. They were an old cemetery parking lot and where a church once stood that had recently burned down. We hunted these for about a half hour each without any results.
Site 6 was a Small Park that we had drove by earlier in the day. We decided since it was getting late that we better try it. It had an Old Gazebo in it and it was a very Small Park. There wasn't much ground to cover but it did have enough for us to last the rest of the day until it got dark. At first, all I could find was Clad. I finally stopped and asked Tim if he had found anything yet. He replied, "3 Wheats". He then dug 2 more before I got a keeper. Tim was already frustrated with me since I was hogging all the Silver again and it didn't help on the next 3 targets in a row. I got a good signal that showed about 8" Deep and dug a plug. Out of the hole came a Barber Dime. Tim started cussing a bit...which Tim doesn't do much of but for some reason he was really going off and told me that I was walking home.
Then I got another signals and dug it and it was a Merc. Tim just shook his head. Then another signal and dug that one and another Merc. Tim then yells out "STOP IT!!!!" with a few bad words attached to the much longer phrase.
I thought Tim was about to kill me and he was Super Peeved now but that was soon to change for him. Tim then turned around very irritated and got another Deeper Signal. He dug it and out pops a Barber Dime. He then replied to me "your lucky that I just found a Barber Dime or you would be walking". I then sat there and watched him dig 2 more Barber Dimes which were in the same hole. That really ticked me off but I was also in relief that Tim had finally started to find a few more Silver. I then started detecting along the sidewalk. I started to get shallow targets about 3"-4" Deep and thought I better check them out since the sidewalk looked like it had just been replaced last year. I then went on in finding a bunch more Wheats at this depth. I then got a Deeper Signal....next to the entrance of the Gazebo which at first gave me a High Tone but then gave me a bit Lower Tone, like a Wheat Penny Signal. I dug this and found the target. It was a Wheat Penny. I then ran the probe into the dirt pile and it sang High and Loud. Silver I thought!!! I removed the dirt with the probe and seen a Quarter sitting there. I picked it up and seen it was a Barber Quarter. Tim was off in the distance looking at me and I looked back at the Quarter and thought about not telling him since this might be the coin that sends him overboard. I then had to tell him since he was wanting to know what I had just found. I then told him a Barber Quarter with a Wheatie and boy....did the F Bombs start dropping!
I couldn't do much but laugh at Tim since it really is funny when he starts swearing since he hardly ever does it. I then replied back to him that I was still getting more signals from the same hole and luckily, for Tim it was only 2 more Wheats. Shortly after this, I heard Tim trying to tell me something. I undid one of my headphones from my ears and heard Tim reply "there's a Cop pulling up right behind you!". At first I didn't understand it clearly but soon realized that the City Cop Car wasn't sitting where it was just moments ago and I heard a vehicle pulling up right behind me. I then thought I had already a hole so I continued digging until I found the target which was another Wheatie. I then covered the hole and you couldn't even see where the plug was when I got done. I then stood up and saw Tim talking with the Officer. I took my headphones off and the Officer asked where we were from. Tim told him and then we started chatting with the Officer. The Officer was pretty nice and he said it was ok for us to detect, just make sure not to leave any holes or make a mess. We agreed we wouldn't. He then reminded us that State Parks are off limits to detecting. I asked about Permits but he didn't think they had those anymore due to others taking Indian Artifacts. He then left and told us good luck and then told us the Park had already been gone through with a Fine Tooth Comb and then left. I told Tim "did you hear that, the Park has already been picked through with a Fine Toothed Comb". Tim the replied back "it has been now". I chuckled when he said that and he laughed too. Only if the Officer had known what we were finding. Anyways, we hunted until dark and I managed a few more Wheats, a Token, and 2 more Merc's...one which was in the same hole as a Buffalo Nickel and both dated 1920. Tim found a few more Merc's as well and a few more Wheats. The weird thing was No Indian Heads were pulled but 6 Barber were. How weird is that??? I was still finding keepers when we left so I will more than likely return later on and continue working this Park since Tim doesn't think it would be worth going back since we hit it pretty hard and covered about 90% of the area. Tim ended the day with 33 Wheats, 7 Tokens, a Buffalo Nickel, and 8 Silver. He also had the McCormick Medallion. Tim did well and we both finished strong at the end of Saturday's Outing. Congrats on getting some well deserved keepers Tim, you earned them!
Here is what I got on Saturday. I found a total of 17 Silver. They consisted of 1 Barber Quarter dated 1900, 2 Washington Quarters dated 1941,1946-d, 3 Barber Dimes dated 1903,1912,1914, 10 Mercury Dimes dated 1917,1920,1923,1935,1936,1936-d,1937-d,1941,1943-d,1944-d, and 1 Roosevelt Dime dated 1954-d. I found 1 Token which reads on one side For Amusement Only and the other side reads This Token Has No Cash Or Trade Value. I also dug 2 Nickels, which were 1 Liberty V-Nickel dated 1903 and 1 Buffalo Nickel dated 1920. After cleaning of the Buffalo Nickel, the date was un-readable so I used Nic-A-Date Date Restorer for Nickels to retrieve the Date and there is a Pic of it seperate. I found only 1 Indian Head and it is dated 1907. Wheat Pennies totaled 35 this outing and they are dated (2)11,14,16,16-d,16-s,(3)18,18-d,19,19-s,27,27-d,(2)28,28-d,29-d,30-d,34,35-s,(2)36,(2)37-d,38-d,40-d,41,(3)41-d,42-d,44-d,45-d, and 46-d. For Misc. Items, I got a Kids Junk Ring, an Electro-Lock Key, the neat Nail File, a Timex Ladies Watch, and the Older Watch that had another dial below the regular time. All in all another fun hunt!!!
Hope you enjoyed this last outing and all the finds I was lucky to make once again. Thanks to you all for looking and hope your hunts can be just as rewarding as some of mine are to me. Good Luck and HH to you all.
