This is a recent find, just learned how to shrink pics. I though that it might be burnt, but the more i look at it the more i think it is a period counterfeit. I found it about 8 inches deep in an old city park.

What you guys think?

It's hard to say from the pictures. I've dug silver coins that have been disfigured by fertilizer and fire. I suggest that you take it to a coin shop and let an expert examine it. I have an old book that was published in the 1880's that lists known counterfeit coins by date and denomination. If you can read a date on your coin I'll check to see if it's listed. Hey, thanks for the reply, the date is 1886 or 1896. Sorry I cannot narrow it down.

My old book: "An Encyclopedia of Practical Information" was published in 1889 and lists for known counterfeit silver $'s the dates: 1880 and 1881. The description is: Base metal with a good silver plating. I haven't looked at this book in years. I found it in an old trunk full of books in the rafters of a barn in Royalton NY over 40 years ago. Let us know what you find out? It's probably genuine - just environmental damage. Best of luck and...

I've seen counterfeits from the period that look like your piece. Probably be more interesting and more valuable if it's a contemporary counterfeit.

I would not even know how to go about selling this piece haha, or how much it is worth.

Here in Spain, fake silver coins of that time - end nineteenth century had the "soul" of iron. Have you tested with a magnet?
