For those of you venturing into Northern Nevada for the first time, particularly Rye Patch, be advised that the annual invasion of Morman Crickets is in full swing. It is amazing how many of these big ugly bugs there are out there. Here are a couple of pictures that might give you some idea.
The first one is a shot of just one. It's hard to get a shot of just one at a time as there are usually a dozen or so within 3 square feet at any one time, jumping and crawling and moving constantly. They are pretty ugly and kind of scary looking the first time. Most are about 3 inches long and colored from black to brown to green to shades of yellow and red. After awhile you don't even notice them, they are as common as the grass and rocks. But they can give you a start if you notice slight movement out of the corner of your eye and think it's a snake in the grass.
In the second picture, you see all those dark spots all over the road? Every one of them is a cricket. Now imagine all you can't see waaaay out there into all those miles and miles of sagebrush. Yep, you can walk or drive for miles in any direction and they will be just as thick. Enjoy with your sleeping bag on the ground!
