Musket ball cache

TomB

New member
After a monsoon this morning, the sun came out and I found myself with nothing to do, which seldom happens, so I decided to go swing a while. I went back to the old home site that I have been hunting but the strong wind prevented me from hunting the open area. I retreated to the wood where the wind was no problem. My first TID was very iffy, ranging from -7 to 12. I laid my 705 down and started digging. My 705 started showing a overload. I moved it father to my right and it stopped. I went back to the hole I had started digging and found a small pocket knife at about 5". I then passed my 705 back over the hole and got a solid 12. About an inch below the knife was a 1944 P (year of my birth) nickle in good condition. I was about to walk away and remembered the overload I had . I passed the coil, 10.5 DD 7.5kHz coil over the area and got a solid 30. I could not get the overload again. I dug and recovered 5 .69 cal musket balls from an area no bigger than the palm of my hand. These balls were at about 5". A first for me. HH TomB

Congrats TomB! :clapping: What a neat find! Looks like a good area to concentrate in. Good luck finding more treasures.

Nice finds! I will meet you there tomorrow :surprised: lol

Congratulations Tom! Someone had to have been sitting on the ground and all the balls fell out of their pocket or pouch? Great find.

Nice hunt Tom

Good stuff Tom. More than once, I've started to walk away when something said I needed to go back. Good thing we listen, isn't it? HH Randy

I see your cache and up you 1 Mini ball! Found it today...

Great finds Tom,wouldnt it be good to know the story behind some of the items we find, and how they got there, etc....

To find all that in one hole is amazing. Half the fun of metal detecting to me is looking up the history of what I've found.
