MX Sport Just read the field test by Andy Sabisch looks good!

Is this the one that you have to be a member of whatever forum to join or can you link to it?

It is in Lost Treasure magazine. Should be able to pull it up online. I just received my sport today and am looking forward to swinging it.

Got into some "warm water" posting information on the MX Sport before the article hit and units started to ship but would be more than happy to answer any questions people might have on the unit . . . . .

Let me know if there are points or questions you have that I can address.

Thanks

Andy

I need something to use on the beach. I would like to see something about the beach mode and Salttrac. All I read is a single freq. machine isn't what you want in wet sand. I hunt at low tide for the most part but it would be nice if needed to go into the trough if the tide isn't low. Andy do you have any info on this? Thanks JR

While I would love to say that the MXSport (or any single frequency VLF) will provide PI / multi-frequency on salt water beaches, I think everyone would immediately question by objectivity. The challenge of black sand and salt water create two different issues that have to be addressed for optimum performance and by the very nature of a VLF detector, there are limits as to what can be done.

For those that have used other White's units with the Salt / Beach option, that option does settle things down a good deal but it will still cause some chatter unless you drop the sensitivity. We used the MXSport in the Charleston, SC area which has both issues present and found it was a decent performer in the wet sand and ran fairly quiet. My wife had an MX5 which functioned about the same in terms of depth and chatter when the Beach Mode option was selected. The waterproof feature on the MXSport made walking into the surf less of an issue than with the MX5 as did the waterproof headphones.

Overall it worked better than most single frequency VLF detectors I have tested on the beaches (salt water and black sand) . . . you did not mention where you hunted as that can be a factor. Some areas such as in Florida without the black sand woudl produce different and stronger results.

Hope this helps

Andy

I hope it will work good on the Outer Banks, As i spent a lot of time down there in the summer walking the beach. also got it to check some spots in a few creeks close to a big dug in winter creek.

Andy,

How does the MX Sport do on dry land. I am looking for a detector to compliment my E-trac and F75LTD2. Am I barking up the wrong tree. Would I be better served by another detector? Not taking anything away from the MX sport just looking for something that can do what my other 2 detectors cannot.

Thanks for the input Andy. Mostly MB area at low tide. Lots of shell beds. Don't see a lot of black sand. It would also be the towel line unit. Will get some mid Fla. and some use in the lower Keys coming up soon. I will have to be in the water there I suspect. Thinking it should be neutral there.

Hey Andy, I have a question about the AUDMOD screen in options. I have read my manual and it makes no mention of this option. Can you shed some light? Adam

The one "issue" I noticed was just that . . . round iron (steel bottle caps) come through sounding like coins and give a VDI that is identical to them as well using the stock round DD coil. I discussed this with the factory and it seems to be the nature of teh beast so to speak. Using the optional 6x10 DD or 950 Eclipse concentric eliminated that problem and I found myself using the 6x10 for most of my coin hunting activities as I got great depth, coverage and separation in trash.

Checking signals from 90 degrees gave some indication by the sound / response but one hates to have to check every target that reads good to see if it is iron.

Not sure when the other coils will be available but one of them might be the answer to what you are experiencing.

Word is that there will be a package providing both coils and other items at a package price.

Hope this helps

Andy how would you compare the mx sport to a t2 or f75 as far as responding to small gold. Not gold from prospecting, but small jewelry like chains and earrings.
Thank you,
Neil

Adam

Yes, that feature is not described in the manual. The AUDIO MODULATION option is either off (0) or on (1) when selected through the OPTIONS menu. It is not available in all of the modes so if it is not an option, you can't select it. It is intended to provide weaker signals for deeper / smaller targets rather than a beep that sounds teh same for all targets. While not as distinctive as an analog detector, it does provide some variance based on signal strength. Personally I would rather hear the deep targets sound the same as the shallow ones and use the depth indication to determine depth before digging but others will opt to use the feature.

Hope this helps

I would be happy to do some comparison testing this evening with the units you mentioned . . . I will say in advance that I think the stock MX Sport coil will not fare as well as the stock one on the F75 LTD / T2 LTD (do not have the non-LTD models) but the optional coils (6x10 DD and 950 Concentric) may produce a different result . . . . .

Andy

Andy, how does the mx balance with the stock coil? It comes in a little heavy at 4ish pounds. In plowed field hunting where I have to hold the full weight , a front heavy detector can be a brute. The sport is on my short list right now of machines to try. thanks

Thanks Andy, I too think I will leave that in the (0) selection.

Andy,

In addition to the bottlecaps hitting like coins, I am getting one way hits that are coin VDI's and Sound on Left to Right Swings, and no indication on Right to left swings. I have thus far ignored those signals, but am wondering if perhaps they are colocated targets. What was your experience with that issue? We were running two MX Sports set identically, on dry land, in both Coin/Jewelry mode as well as Hi Trash mode, and both were performing as stated. It was enough of an oddity, happening with enough frequency to capture my attention.

I failed to dig those, as I dismissed them as anomalies. Thanks for the response.

Same with me today. Numerous hits on coins one way and they would not pinpoint. I dug one just to see what it was and sure enough it was a coin. Had several more during the day and they all turned out to be coins. This happened only in the "high trash mode".
