MX Sport three weeks in

King Bee

New member
Bought the MX Sport three weeks ago and have been doing causual hunting at local parks. I was out of hunting for a few years but was primarily a Vaquero and Sea Hunter MKII Hunter. So, tone and beep machines. Visual screens are basically new to me. Some things I've noted with the Sport:

Good:
1. It's a good, solid and deep machine.
2. It has great pin pointing.
3. It's an acceptable saltwater beach machine. At least here in FL. My beaches are full of nails so I stopped using my PI all together, though that was my primary hunting for years in CA and I would dig everything.
4. Waterproof!
5. Great balance and long battery life.
6. Grounding is a breeze.
7. Tons of options to play around with.

Bad:
1. On my unit I almost always have to "double clutch" the pin pointer to get it on. So, turn it on then off then on again. Annoying but not worth sending it in right now.
2. Loves bottle caps, but I think that's been gone over to death.

Aside from the beach, I've been hunting in coin mode with a few things notched out. I vary the sensitivity after i hit an area, bumping it up to go back for the deep stuff. I kept a journal of a few hunts with readings and depths of finds if anyone is interested.

I haven't found any gold yet, but that's not unusual. I'm really interested in anyone who has found gold with the Sport in coin mode and what tones they were getting. In my tests I usually see it around 22 for a 10k four inches down in soil. If anyone finds some gold with a sport please chime in and tell me where on the gauge it was hitting. Thanks!

Here's some finds not including the many, many fittings, bottle caps and can slaw I've dug so far. Some good wheats, silver, baubles and lots of clad. I figure I can fill that huge pickle jar in a few months. Not pictured, half a dozen .50 Cal shells. :)

Ahh the weather in Florida must be much nicer then in New Hampshire. Hey thanks for sharing your experience with the MX $ I'm sure gold will be coming soon for you !

I'm very happy with the machine and the price point. I can't wait to try out the new coils. The pin pointer thing is an annoyance at most and I'm sure I'll get it fixed at some point. I'm really hoping fellow users pop in and let us know what kind of tones they're getting on finds. I'm going to transcribe my notes and add them to this thread, hopefully today.

Hi to you in Florida...

'You lucky dog' is all I can say! I left Fla to live elsewhere and would like to get back again on a more permanent move?

On the Pin Point issue you are experiencing: I have to say my experience is the complete reverse of yours.
I think the Pin Point aspect of the MXS is one of the 'better' features and can often go 'under reported' in Posts.

There IS a 'Double Clutch' aspect to it's operation: just Tap it and it engages or Hold it. Tap it again to off it.
The other thing I found is quite unusual when compared to several other models and I found it locates better if the coil isn't moved that much from or off the target.

I just watched a video from Garrett by Steve Howard on the Ace 300 and in the Pin Point section the coil is moved at least a coil's width away from where the target is.

Good Hunting in Florida...

Oh yeah, Florida is really great for hunting. Especially since I'm in an older area. And with the common storms having a waterproof unit is really great.

Pinpointing: Yes, it's spot on. I mean really accurate and the depth meter is on the money. However I think my unit has an actual defect. I hit or hold pinpoint and it doesn't work at all. I have to go back to search for a split second and then reengage pinpoint and 99% of the time it fires up pinpoint mode. Very rarely I have to do three times. But, not a big deal.

And if it sees a 70-77 copper penny or dime right on the surface and it's not right there. 99% chance of bottle cap three or four inches down in my experience. :) I dig them all anyways.

So here is a portion of a journal of a hunt at a 70s local multipurpose park field. This is coin mode with sensitivity at 6. Apologize that it's disorganized. Just wanted to show some tones I'm getting.

Went back to park today and pulled a heart stopped ring but it was titanium. :(

Anyway, it read a solid 24 @ 5".

I forgot one more little gripe. After the first battery change the battery pack wouldn't keep contact with the connectors in the box. Like it had developed "wiggle room." Since I was in the field already I just picked up a small wood chip and used it inside the screw top as a shim. Worked perfectly ever since.

"That happened when we developed the 1st Explorer XS model back in 1999 - when testing one day the recharge pack expired and I popped in 'Sony' alkalines and they were too short!
So a change was made to bigger springs inside the spare alkaline holder supplied with the detector"

Got another Rosie today and small silver ring. Both rang dime 75-77. Ring @7" rosie@ approx 3".

Finding a lot of clad dimes ring as copper pennies. But could be soil conditions.

Was at a new park and it has a ditch running through and the flood plains from the Florida rains are plainly visible. In the flood plains area the machine was definitely chattery. I didn't try salt track on it. I just moved to higher ground. Next time I'll try and see what's in there.

Went to some woods today on a military base and picked up 10 .50 Cal shells. All rung as 70-77 dimes @3-5".

"Are you still having difficulty accessing the pin point button function or have you sussed it out?

Having used an MX Sport I didn't or couldn't fault the pin point button at all. In fact I thought it was "sweet".

It's still doing the same thing. A minor nuisance so I'm not fussed about it. When it engages it's right on the money (no pun intended, lol). However, my coil cover disappeared while hunting some very thorny and vine ridden jungly brush. :( I didn't even notice until the next day and danged if I'm going back through there to find it.

So I just ordered the 6x10 DD coil. Interested to see what it pops up. Found a sliver clover pendant today about 2x2". Had to run salt mode in the park I mentioned that floods out and is heavily mineralized. Worked perfectly. Really digging this machine. Can't wait to see what the new coil does.

Popped up another small silver ring today at 70. 8" deep. Along with various clad and junk.

I'd love to see some folks coming in with their readings on this machine.
