MXT 300

Joel-Winnipeg

New member
Bought a unused MXT 300 plus a 4x6 Eclipse DD for my second MXT.
Promptly took the 300 coil off and replaced it with the 10x12 Sef coil.
Other MXT is running with the 8x6 coil.
Does anyone use the 300 coil with there detector and is it better than the sef ?

I think Laurie and Eric (RelicDirtyHands) use a 300 on the MXT but if they have a 10x12 SEF, I am not aware of it. I just got a 10x12 SEF for mine but I don't have the 300.

Theirs a 6x10 or something like that double d and you need it the mxt is not good without it. Can't handle the iron or trash.

I think the 300mm or 12" coil might be used more if it wasn't a clumsy heavy coil. If they would have put the ears where the rod attaches towards the center of the coil and not out towards the edge of the coil it would have balanced much better. As it is the coil seems to want to tip all the time. The 10 x 12 SEF balances much better and works good.

I don't know where you are getting your information but the MXT is a great all around detector and I don't own the 6X10 or something like that. Do you own a MXT or are you just throwing your 2 wheat cents out there? I do very well in trash and iron with the MXT.

I have used my stock coil 95% of the time and I have no problems with iron or trash. Maybe you're not setting your machine right. :whites:

If balance was the only problem, that is easily fixed by turning your lower rod 180 degrees with the 300mm (12") coil. The mounting ears are now on the outermost part of the coil and most of the weight is on the inside of the lower rod, it makes a world of a difference on the center of gravity.

The biggest problem with answering your question Joel is the answer is both yes and no........ The 300 is a concentric coil working best in the milder, pretty trash free ground like beaches and relic hunting. The SEF, is a DD style that works best in mineralized ground and has great separation in trash. Which one is best depends on where and how you use them.

This may have more to do with the coil than the machine. I was hunting a park recently that was so pounded out I didn't get a single clad dime or quarter hit in 4 hours of hunting, but I still managed to pull an old wheat cent out of it that everybody else had missed . . . this was using the 5.3 eclipse.

YMMV

Thanks Larry for your explanation. :thumbup:Will keep that info in mind.

A few yrs ago the 300 was on the MXT for a hunt. man that was a pain into all that trash.
As Larry said it is for nearby trash free areas with milder mineralization.

I still use the 300 coil when I am dry sand hunting. I am more of a "sand scrubber", so I don't feel the weight as much.
As an aside, I learned something today! I didn't realize the "300" stood for 300MM or 12"!

I use the 300 in really clean ground only. have pulled bullet fragments (very small} at 16 inches along Oregon trail but has to be clean ground otherwise way to busy .

i use both the 8x6 sef and the 10x12 sef, they both separate excellant in iron and trash, i have found that they dont ID well though.

The 12"/300 Coil will smoke the 12x10, and when you do the Maths on the 2 coils its by quite a margin, In low to above High normal Ground the 12" will go deeper, But from that point it will loose depth to equal or A bit less than the 12x10 coil, its easier pinpointing with the 300 coil, you can dig 13-14 inch coins all day with the 300. To Equal the Depth of the 300 Coil you would need either A 15 or 18 inch Round DD Coil. And It does work in junk filled sites, you just have to pay Attention more, I know of people who have found 1 ozt Gold Nuggets at 18" inches with the 300 coil, the 12x10 only has A depth capacity of 11" the 300 coil will hit coin way past that In Normal soil it will hit coins 16" Deep,

Hope this helps.
