MXT to F75 ????

Thinking about going from a very good MXT to a F75, but am not sure about the reliability and performance of the F75 after reading some of the bad reports about the F75. (http://metaldetectorreviews.net/detectors/175-3-fisherf75.html) What do you think?

The F75 is the best detector I've used. I've had a number over the years and it's reponse is lightning fast, it goes very deep, I've found coins at 12-14'. Its also the lightest detector I've ever used. I can swing it all day and not be tired. The review you mention has been addressed on the forum many months ago, but I don't think its genuine. There are responses to it at the same website I think if you look.

Good luck!

Jess, I currently use the MXT and I was thinking about doing the same thing. After poking around in this forum, and other forums, for months now trying to decide if it is a good idea or not, I have decided I will get an F75 as soon as I get the funds available, but I'll keep my MXT as a very good back-up. The truth is, I've never been able to get the same depth with my MXT that people are talking about getting with the F75. Fast recovery, good, light weight, good, but the selling point for me has been the consistent depth others are claiming to get. I hunt a lot of heavy hunted areas and I've always felt like there was a lot of stuff just outside the range of my MXT. Most of the complaints about the F75 I read appear to be from people who either didn't carefully read the owners manual, or people trying to push the sensitivity too high for the conditions. Based on months of reading in this and other forums, it appears the one drawback could be that it may be overly sensitive to outside interferrence for some reason. The F75 has a frequency shift which may help overcome that, but there seems to be some consistency in the posts that interference is an issue. Still, I think upgrading to the F75 will be worth it. My second choice would have been the Minelab SE, but I've settled on the F75 as my next detector. From what I've read, the Minelab SE may get slighty better depth and the target ID may be a little better at greater depths, but the F75 is lighter and has a faster recovery. I decided that having the lighter machine and the faster recovery would allow me to cover more ground and hunt longer, giving me the chance to find more good stuff. In my opinion, covering more ground with the F75, in the little free time I have to detect, outweighs the value of the slight extra depth gained by the slow coil sweep of the Minelab. I'm sure there are plenty of others who will disagree with my logic, but I don't think it is a mistake. Hope this helps.

But since you're asking for opinions between the two on a Fisher F-75 forum .... expect to get partial results, especially from the folks that have actually spent the TIME it takes to understand the capabilities of the F-75.
The MXT has a great reputation along with build quality and decent depth. It is by far the most popular detector used in Virginia's bad dirt for relic hunting.

My F-75 performed very well last year in Virginia and everywhere I've used it in between, and by the way, I live in the iron ore belt in north Alabama where a LOT of iron ore pebbles are mixed in with some nasty HOT red clay. MANY detectors don't fair very well here including the MXT, Tejon, Coinstrike, very few Garrets, etc. etc. etc. as I've tried many.

The F-75 being Fishers NEW kid on the block in a 3.5 lbs. package is WAY different in many aspects, some good and some bad, depending on WHO you ask.
Digital technology has opened the doors for lighter and more user friendly detectors that take full advantage of quicker responding and overall superior software.

Personally .... I really like the F-75, no I'm NOT crazy about the build quality either but it hasn't broke, fallen apart, went up in smoke or anything like that yet.
I think most of the problems posted about the F-75 turned out to be USER related in the long run, trying to tame the beast, it's a different detector that simply takes time to learn.
Sure ... every newly released detector WILL have some go out the door with earnest problems ... no matter who manufactures it !

The F-75 is NOT just about depth, although it IS capable of extreme depth, it's very sensitive and you'll hear more metal in the ground with it than any other machine you'll ever pick up, it's great in iron, excellent notching and it's seperation qualites are 2nd. to none that I've used in 27 years. Processor re-set speed between co-located targets is superior IMO.

The 4 AA battery life is simply AMAZING, it will hunt 4 times longer than a MXT at 1/2 the cost in ( alkalines).... and that's with the F-75 back-light ON all the time.
I'd strongly suggest that you go to a dealer and try one out to see if it fits your needs before buying though, or better yet if you have a friend that uses one, ask him for permission to take it for a test drive.

There you have it ... my opinion :smoke:

Good Hunting

Hi Stouto:

I'm one of those who bought an F-75 early on and I love it so much more than my MXT. The weight difference is reason enough to buy an F-75. Another great reason in notching which you can't do on an MXT. With notching you can take out all the pull tabs and STILL keep the nickles! With the MXT if you disc to much you take out the nickles. Big difference.

Now I bought my MXT so I could go nugget hunting and that was the reason I bought the F-75 because if was more suited to coins which I do all the time but I could still take it out nugget hunting. I also didn't like the constant threshold of the MXT. The F-75 give you a choice of silence or threshold. I like that.

As I mentioned I sold my MXT for a XT-70 because I was going nugget hunting and didn't want to swing a heavy MXT after using the light F-75 all summer and yet the F-75 was basically untested in the gold fields and I didn't want to get skunked when the trip was costing so much. Long story short. I used the XT-70 for the first two days and found gold so small I was amazed that it could be detected. The third day however, I took the gold I found with the XT-70, placed it on the ground and gave the F-75 a go at the tiny gold. The F-75 not only picked up the tiny gold, the air test clearly to all that were watching the test surpassed the XT-70 and with that confidence I used the F-75 the rest of the day and found three tiny nuggets with the F-75. I was in JE with NO problem running it at sen 85-90 and swinging like a mad man because the F-75 recovers so fast.

It is my opinion that you will NOT be disappointed buying an F-75. All I complain about is the fact that the F-75 can not be broken down enough to fit in a airline carry on and I'm not going to check a $900 machine with a the bags getting lost. As to the XT-70, it's a great little machine, but I would trade it in for another F-75 backup in an instant if the F-75 could travel with me. Until then, the XT-70 goes on the road with me.

the F75 is a great machine has a lot more programing then the MXT faster lighter deeper. But I can't say why there have been so many problems with the machine. I have had no problems with mine thank god. I think Fisher has addressed the problems in the newer batch but as with every new unit there are always bugs to work out. I would go with the F75 and it has replaced all of my machines.

I think that if you read a lot of the posts and responses on this forum and the F75 forum, you will find that most do not place much faith in the web site you have referenced.

The F75 is an excellent machine and I have not had any customers with problems and I have not had any probelms with the one I use. All manufacturers will have problems with a certain % of their machines due to the failure of parts or human error. They all try to keep that % as low as possible and if problems do arise they stand behind their product and get them fixed.

If you spend the time to learn the F75 you may be amazed at what the machine will do.

Yikes! Your scareing me!:surprised:

With such a good machine as the MXT, why would you want to switch.
Your not going to sell your MXT are you? I'd keep it.
There are many people who are happy with their F75 but there ARE some bad
reviews as well. On the other hand I don't see too many people wanting to get rid
of their MXT's. and I don't see many bad reviews. In fact I don't believe I have
EVER seen a bad review on the MXT. That speaks volumes in my book.

Robert R

There are some good and bad reviews. Its a mixed bag. Here are some remarks by some other people on the F75.
Personally I'd keep my MXT. Maybe you can find a dealer that will let you rent a machine for a few days.

F75 Complaints

Can I please get peoples opinions on the F75.
Thank You

HH Twister

Well, all reports on the T2 were decent. Good depth, etc etc. It is supposedly the relic hunters choice of detectors. The F75, which is an upgraded T2 has some features incorporated that the T2 didn't have, such as saving settings when the power is turned off.

Here is the link to findmall.com's F75 classroom page, its got some good info from the designers and users of the machince. http://www.findmall.com/list.php?35

Here is a post by Andy,NM on the above mentioned forum

"I have a german homepage where i rate detectors by my own rating system.
People seem just to talk about depth, but that isn't the only strength a detector can have.

My 100 points system (10 max. for each category):

1. Features
2. Depth and stability
3. Discrimination und Notchsystem
4. Ease of use
5. Types of hunting that can be done with the detector
6. Weight and balance
7. Powerconsumption and operating costs
8. Build Quality
9. Warranty
10. Price and value

Now let me rate the F75:

1.Features:
Notch system, backlight, VDI display, Fastgrab GB, Magnetic Mineralization Bar Graph Read Out, Batterie meter, Depth on the fly meter, different Tone ids , True all metal mode, Processing modes, Confidence meter, Pinpoint, 11"DD coil.

It has not as much feature as the DFX or Explorer but it has enough.

I would rate it 8 points.

2. Depth and stability

You guys know my tests on the US nickel. For a single frequency detector depth is a 10 and stability is 10 too. Now some may say why 10 points on stability since the F75 gets unstable some times ? I see that this way. If you would the F75 set up to do as good as other single frequncy detector is would be as stable as any other detector. Just if you push it to depth other detectors can't reach anymore it can become unstable.

Points 10 here.

3. Disc and notch a 10 too. Once you understand the notch it is very easy to use and can be reversed. The disc works very well too, disc out large steel is not a problem.

Points 10.
4. ease of use.
The menu system for a detector with all these features is very easy to use and see. If you have owned an explorer or DFX you know what a 5 points detector is. This is a 10.
Points 10.

5. Types of hunting that can be done with the detector
Relic, coins, gold prospecting and due to the DD coil saltwater beaches well too for a single frequency detector. I have not rated a detector 10 points since no detector can do it all perfect. I rate this one 9 points because it can do most (Relics, Coins) very well and other things well (Gold Prospecting, Beaches).
9 points.
6. Weight and balance
I don't no any other detector with display that is so light-weight and well balanced.
10 points.
7. Powerconsumption and operating costs
Using 4 AA bateries is the future, because you can buy a charger that drops operating costs so low, that you really make mony detecting and not spend the found change to buy batteries. A runtime of over 30 hours with 4 AAs is the best.
10 points.
8. Build Quality
An aluminum control box would push it to 10 but i'll rate it a 9 the way it is now.
9 points
9. Warranty
Not lifetime, not only two years, it's five years.
8 points

10. Price and value
It is expensive but for some worth 940 $ internet price. After all the detectors i have bought and what they did for the money i would put this one in the $ 750 range. At that price it would sell like hotcakes because it would beat all is that pricerange. On the other hand i have the money to buy a over $ 1000 Explorer or DFX but i use the F75 as my number one right now. I just like the power on low conductors, the speed and the lack of weight.
8 Points.
Total points: 92 points
That is the highest total rating I gave to a detector to this day.
Next is the X-terra 70 with 86 points. (ease of use and warranty (just two years) cuts down on the points compared to the F75)

I've been out a couple times with one. I have no definitive answers but I have to say that this detector is very fast at recovery speed and goes very deep. The overall performance is excellent. There are things that I haven't done with it yet and the eather here in CT doesn't seem to want to let me go out at all but I will be getting out more soon. I like the fact that I can start up where I left off with the settings being saved. this is a big plus over the T2. The detector is very well balanced and is comfortable to use for long periods of time. A recent discovery about the F75 gets you more depth by rasing the disc above 20. Almost 2 more inches can be had.
All in all ( so far ) this detector appears to be as advertised and worth the money. The more I ( and others ) get out with it the better all opinions will be.

I don't think some people are telling the truth about the F75, there have been complants about chatry, pops and very unstable. The one I have does nothing but make noise, burbs, pop, and will drive you nuts no matter what you set it at. When these problems came up on ^%$$*$ Forum nobody wants to talk about it. If you look at the tester for the F75 or any unit from Fisher they are relic hunts. I don't think the F75 was ever test in a park for coin shooting.I love my Coinstike and 3D. If I had to pick a unit to take out, the F75 would stay at home, my Ace 250 I think is better then the F75. They will be some people that will bash me for this, I say oh well, lets talk about how the F75 act, its like snap, crackle and pop in you head phone.

duggr
It can be noisy if you don't have it adjusted correctly in the mode your searching! I think of it as a New Breed of detector that is actually several detectors rolled
into one, and each search mode and the various adjustments requires some time spent with the detector to actually know what is going on. I usually end up re-reading the manual after using it and will gain more understanding and insight the more I read it and spend time with the detector in the field. It's not like my Old Compass Scanner or Mark-1 or even my XL Pro,which are actually easier to adjust. I think the new F75 will require some good old investigating and time well spent in the field to realize what it is telling you.I have yet to really put the time involved into it as to understand just a portion of it's technology,( Work ,Work ,Work) but I'm willing to take the time even it's just a hour or two each time out. I do know when I did and indoor sensitivity test that setting the sensitivity below 30 made the detector more erratic than when it was set a 70 for instance. I beleive a notepad or voice recorder will come in handy to take notes in the field for later thought in the matter,on the subject of settings in the different modes and where the ground was balancing at as well as what the Mineral bar graph was indicating. The F75 has all the right tools,..... I beleive we just need the time and patience to discover and learn the various combinations that work in each particular Search Mode as well as the different area's that we hunt.

well i dont know about the F75 but i know about Fisher's Coustomer service or lack of it i should say.i just had a real battle with Fisher over a $7 part.if anyone would like to read the email iv been having with them just email or pm me and id be glad to share it with you.it just might make you think again on buying a Fisher!

Icandigit
Ok some people think if they own one it's the best. I own a F75 and it's the biggest hunk of junk there is. Yes, I would love to sell it so don't offer unless you are serious or you will own it. It's OK when it works but it has been back at Fisher more then it has been to the park in the 3 months I have owned it. Don't say it's me because they keep finding stuff wrong with it. The service is terrible and the product is cheap. I am going back to Whites as soon as I unload this thing. I would rather have a machine that is dependable then one that is always in for repairs. Even on it's best days I have not been impressed with depth or anything else. Every machine can find an occasional dime at 10 inches if the operator is comfortable with the unit. This thing should never have been put into production. I am not alone on this but most people are made to feel stupid if they say anything bad about this unit. So let it fly, I have been called stupid before, but I do dig a lot of silver.

Hill City Rebel
I'm afraid I agree with many of your comments, icandigit. I've tested the F75 against other machines and it's lacking in most departments. I've also used most of the other machines out there, and I keep coming back to the Troy Shadow X5. All in all, it's the best machine I've ever used. I haven't used the latest White's models, so I can't compare it to them. One thing about the F75 that I found during my comparison tests - in all-metal mode it has better range in air BY FAR than any other detector I've ever had. And that includes the Shadow X5, Fisher 1266 with 11" head, and Nautilus DMC-IIB with 15" coil. You can see the tests here... http://treasurehunter.booklocker.com/. I'm waiting on cool weather to try it on those deep artillery shells.

Icandigit
Yes it has been so disappointing to lay out that much money and get junk. Bad thing is they won't even replace the machine. The ones that work seem to work good but the bad ones, well. I have even had dealers telling me they are not happy with the product. I also have a Tesoro and it loves to go to work every time you turn it on and I have found deeper coins with it. It's sad to see a company like Fisher end up like this. I hate to even sell mine to someone as I would feel like I was cheating them.

erikk
I understand that there are a lot of problems with some of the F-75's out there and I don't have an answer but I do own one and so far it has performed beyond my expectations. I also have a couple of Minelab EX2's and, a CZ7a pro as well as having owned many machines in the 40+ years I have been detecting and again, so far my F-75 is out performing them all in most cases. It is great in iron and trash and the response is lightning fast, depth is equal to the Explorer (maybe deeper) It is a great detector when it works and I only hope that they can get the bugs in manufacturing worked out and for the people who have problems that they make them right.
Well I got mine May 28-I have had 3 coils-all bad, bad solder joints on main board, and now bad coil again, out of this time with shipping and repair it has been gone 6 weeks. Now I have only got probably 25 hours on this machine. I have requested a replacement machine twice and have gotten nowhere. If this machine is so sensitive in operation to be bothered with cell phones, garage door openers and so on, it will also be leaking so people with pacemakers should avoid it. When mine worked it was stable,in fact I could work under power lines with no problem, you just have to adjust it down for conditions. Coil shielding on this machine is a big problem and that is why everyone complains about chattering. Is it good, yes when it works but then so where the Teknetics 9000B units and look where they are. My point with this machine is it is good, but only when it works. If you get poor service and cannot keep something running it is worthless. For everyone that complains on this unit there is always someone telling you that you are wrong to make negative remarks about First Texas so most people are like me and give up and get rid of the units out of anger. I hope whoever buys one of these machines get a good one but after 30 years of detecting and 3 new machines this year, this is the last Fisher I buy. If it don't work and they can't fix it it is junk.

Michigan Badger
I removed my post above because I made reference to maybe buying a 75 but this afternoon decided to go with the Minelab GT.

Most reports I've heard on the 75 have been favorable but one type had me very concerned. I've read too many postings about poor customer service from Fisher today.

If there's poor service after the buy it really doesn't matter how good the machine is in the 1st place (in my thinking).

I know Tesoro, Nautilus, and Minelab (I once owned the Excal). These companies stand 100% behind their products and that means a lot to me.

I may still buy a 75 someday but for now I'll take the wait and see stance.

GoldenRoyBoy
Man; "Good sakes alive!"
After reading through some of the reviews for the F-75 I, for one am baffled by all the negatism. Yes, I own an F-75 and yes, mine is for sale. But, it has nothing whatsoever to do with the quality or performance of the lastest and last "FISHER" machine. Owning and using Minelab's SE is good enough for me at present because of the options that are availible and the top notch quality of the machine. The F-75, although an excellent detector IMO lacks any options at this time to my knowledge. I just can't do without SunRay's X-1 and won't.

I will say one thing negative and I've said it before; I don't like how Fisher opted to design the battery (ies) insertion but it works. I haven't had a single problem with my detector at all. In fact I took it out on a trip to Walsengburg yesterday just to make sure everything was as it should be. I had not used my F-75 since the first of August and all was well.

I wish all good days digging!

stevesno
I have been a user of Fisher detectors for many years now. I have always been impressed with the ease of use and the CUSTOMER SERVICE. Unfortunately their customer service department has taken a nosedive and when I am done with this CZ3D I will give other brands a try...Steve

detectoraddict
So far I've found it to be a decent detector. It's display resets fast and its been good in the iron. The small coil works great in the trash. It does go deep. I have compared it to my Explorer 2 by taking both machines in the field together. It has not detected anything the Explorer can't and visa versa. I don't care for the quality of the F-75 at all, not for the price they are asking for it. The electronics are great and the coil seems to be made ok. They need to improve the battery compartment as far as the springs go. Also, they need to put a sturdier handle on it and a more quality foam grip on the handle.

I believe the problem with interferrence problem is still mainly due to the sensitivity being set too high. Our house has electrical lines on two sides and there is a cell phone tower on the ridge above the house and I do not have any probelm. I don't have any problem with it in the house either, even with the computer on and only about 4 feet away. This may be because I hunt mostly in the DE mode. The soil in NW GA does not like the JE mode too much and I am digging pretty good with the DE. I have not tried having my cell phone on and close to the detector and I know this is usually one of the sources of iinterference that is mentioned. The point I am trying to make is that the F75 can be adjusted to minimize or eliminate the interference problem and sometime is just as simple as turning the sensitivity down. The machine will still get great depth even at lower sensitivity settings.

take any so called "review" with a grain of salt as with no way of verifying who's actually posting under bogus names, e-mails, etc. its simple for any other brands shill to go in & make up stuff to try to kill sales & sway you to their brand. This happens all the time over there & its too bad because a legit reviews site is a good idea. If they just verified who was actually writing the stuff it may work?? They also let all kinds of nonsence go on like the guy who posted twice from florida slamming a fisher who forgot what town he was from. But he got 2 seperate slams in & that webmaster lets it all go. They need to review their reviews and boot the obvious slams with adjendas or jerks posting 2-3-4 times. The site gets used as a place to say "This one sucks, go get a garret ace instead" for example. Now tell me a garrett dealer didnt post that.
peace,
RS.

I have both the MXT and the F75. I will keep the MXT until such a time A larger coil is available for the F75. At that point, the MXT will be sold. I love both machines, but if I could only have one, it would be the F75. Lighter and more flexablilty. I've had no problems with mine and have found coins deeper with it than any other machine with similar sized coils.

I am a White's, Nautilus,Garrett, Tesoro and a Fisher Dealer....I hunted with the MXT for years and it is an excellent machine. I now hunt with an F-75 and would rate it first in the field of relic and coin hunting...
F-75, Nautilus DMC IIB, and the MXT/M6.... One thing that you have to remember is that the person who operates the machine makes up the major part as to how the machine will operate. All of the aforementioned machines will work great but thorough knowledge of each's machine's limitations and abilities will make the difference... To find good targets where others have missed, both because of depth and masking, get the Fisher......check this out....http://www.findmall.com/read.php?35,636310,636310#msg-636310 This area had been hunted hard since the 60's and quite literally walked over by 1000's of detectorists. Why did we find the cannonball..... The processor speed allowed for the trash signals to be dropped fast enough so that in between it and another, there was a good signal and also the machine was capable of that depth...nothing else was able to or the detectorist didn't recognize what the machine was trying to tell him....Having access to most detectors out there, most of them will produce under normal circumstances but under extremes go for the Fisher.... Best to all, Richard

I am 3 weeks new to this metal Detecting and bought a new F75, coulda Gotten the Minelab se and almost did..But I to live in Iron ore country and wanted a good Relic and coin Shooter after reading reviews for several weeks on Both machines I liked the Idea of the Fast proccessor the F75 has and recovery speeds.I get it go outside and GB and off to hunting, I like all the options It truley like having several different Detectors in one, and Is a great machine for me to Grow into..I can say the pin pointer Is Spot on its like Zoooming in the Target. And you can almost tell how Big the target is..I got the 11" coil and the 6"..But I been holding the raines back this weekend I will do some major hunting from Sand to red clay for what ever we Find..All I can say as a newbie is I love this machine , Its like having a AR-15 at picking out targets.I currently have over 300 acres to Hunt virgin ground, From civil war to slavery..So I hopefully Bought the Best tool for the Job, Only time will tell, and I'm excited to get started.James

Before the Fisher F75 came out my main detector was the White's M6. The M6 is the MXT's little brother.

The F75 offers much more control over the detector for the more experienced hunter.

You can control the gain much better on the F75 by choosing the right processing mode. Tone ID, weight and balance and power consumption is better on the F75.

I see the F75 as a more powerful, more featured MXT.

I know the F75 has some bad reviews on that page, but these reviews come from guys who used the detector a short time or just wanted to bash the F75 because it is made by First Texas.

The www.fisherf75.com page is full of info of how to use the F75. Fishers quality control has improved too and they take a close look at any problem that comes up and solve it.

After using many detectors from many companies the F75 is my personal number one.
