MXT to Ganes Creek, AK for Gold - Advice?

In two weeks I'll be taking my MXT to Ganes Creek, Alaska after trophy gold nuggets. I've been posting all over the net asking for tips and pointers. I thought I'd try the MXT experts.....

Any advice on how best to use the MXT? Prospecting mode? Relic? Readings, VDI's, etc?

I haven't used it much, so any help would be appreciated;

Don't have an MXT, so can't help you there, but I did work in that area for seven years......my advice: Pack Heat, that's Grizzley Country.
 
Take a look at the Alaska Gold Forum and Steve Herschbach's comments on the MXT at Ganes. Hope to be reading that you found one of the big ones this year. Au to you.
 
Hey Alien Bogey. I detect up here in Alaska regularly with my MXT. I have never hunted Ganes Creek. My pockets arent that deep right now. But I have read a lot of what Steve Herschbaugh and others have written. From what I hear you nead to get off the beaten path and hunt the places others seem to ignore. I also have heard that their is a lot of junk and some of it will definitely sound off as gold. This is my experience here in all the places I have hunted. I dig a lot of bullets when Im off the beaten path. But the gold is massive there. I have talked to a couple different people who have visited there and a couple regulars. So I guess I have received some palpable word of mouth advice. One peice I got was use a big coil to cover more ground, but have a small coil handy to Work in tight areas and areas of high trash. Run your SAT high, and wear good detecting headphones, and turn up gain as high as you can stand it. Bring a rock pick and a shovel and dont give up on digging a good signal. I am just repeating what I have heard, but this advice comes in good in places I hunt on the Kenai peninsula, though I have never found anything as big as they have. But I know its out there.:yikes: Dont forget mosquito protection and Rain gear. Definite musts throughout Alaska. I swear by 100% DEET. This Advice i got from one man who has found most of the big gold nuggets with a mxt at Ganes Creek. He said Keep on looking. He couldnt beleive how many people spend so much money on their gear and the trip to ganes, then they get there and hunt for a couple hours get tired and then spend the rest of their time goofing off and miss that chance at a big gold nugget. The person who told me this hunts dusk to dawn and digs about every ding. I hope you find the biggest nugget of your life and some of this helps. Oh yeah Dont forget a big pistol or at least Bear Spray. Which incidently has saved more lives than Firearms in Alaska against bears in the past 100 years. Check the fish and game website for more details. However you wont drag the 44 off my chest. hh
