My accidental results from fast and deep combined:

Went to a park today and my SE called pull tabs silver about 12 times in a row while I'm cutting through frozen ground to get these.:ranting: So I'm looking at my X-1 probe thinking it's still switched on, When I tried to pinpoint with it it wouldn't and I'm for the first time thinking this SE sucker is going to the manufacturer cause it's acting stupid.:stretcher: And it was weird that a couldn't trust her anymore like a cheating girlfriend or something.:nono: Thought my coil was whacked to. Well just before I decided to give this turkey the axe I thought I'd better check my settings and make sure it wasn't something simple, well sure enough I was in fast and deep at the same time, don't do that one fellas.:rofl:You'll swear it's broken. I tried to hunt now for two different days this way, not realizing it. See my post down below "worst day yet" I thought it was the cold. The only valid targets I dug were all on the surface. Boy, I felt stupid as hell. See, it's cold and with gloves on it's really easy to hit the wrong little button, so watch that. You know when you hit iron mask and accidentally push noise cancel, that's always an effective use of my leisure time.

Aaahh ~ one of those days eh Digitrich !

Wow, digitrich, I could see where that could cause serious brain damage to someone.:rage: Thanks for the heads up. Happy Hunting Grounds,

Savage.

I've never tried using Fast AND Deep. That would be couter-productive. I believe that Minelab even says that in the video. Not to say that there may not be a time and a place where it MIGHT be of some value, but there are basically 3 supported modes..."Normal", which is both of them off, "Fast" which is Fast ON and Deep OFF, and "Deep" which is Deep ON and Fast OFF. I would think that running Fast ON and Deep ON would have dubious results at best and might make the machine unstable.

Actually the Explorer XS works really well on the beach with both of them on. The fast makes it respond better to small gold and the Deep is obvious! I have tried all the combinations and have always come back to having both Fast and Deep on when hunting the beach. The only exception is a really trashy beach that is loaded with rusty iron like right after a big storm. In that case I switch the Deep to Off but leave the fast turned on. JMHO

But when you get in iron, fast and deep combined is going to be allot less productive then one or the other by itself.

Fast and Deep ON works great at the beach and will work fine in a large open areas too. Some folks still run both on in parks but they really know their Explorer.
Experience means EVERYTHING.
Thing is though, Minelab has made every new model increasingly more sensitive "per scale" every time they update. From the original S model, the XS, the EXII and now the SE along with several other amenities we've asked for along the way.
I'm simply stating that you might get the same depth at sens 18 on the SE as you did sens set at 24 on the XS. That doesn't mean that the SE is capable of hunting deeper than the XS if you turn the sens up to wide open on both units doing a side by side comparison.
One just needs to spend the time with a new model to learn how to adjust it for their needs and site conditions compared to what they were use to before, simple enough !
Newbies to the Explorer ... well there's just no other way to make sense of it all other than time spent doing it.

Just my 2 cents worth
Mike

On the bottom RH corner ( page 54 of the SE manual ) there are comments about setting fast and deep on at the same time.

As can be seen below, they don't actually say NOT to run both (as they DO allude to in the video) but they do show it resulting in less accurate ID and discrimination. And I suppose in relation to other settings, it COULD contribute to instability or the perception by the user thereof.

But I am also now wondering what might be the result of trying Fast OFF Deep OFF at some sites I've hunted. Because the first thing I did with my Explorer II and with the SE was to set Deep to ON. And I've done well with that. But now I'm curious to see how the SE may act in my test garden (full of deep tough targets in bad ground) with both off. I'm gonna try playing with it a few different ways and see.

Here's the scoop from the manual, for ready reference in the context of this discussion:

Mike, it appears that the XSII and SE are no different than the original XS in what the two functions do, with that said, I have found with my XS after 6 years of use that keeping DEEP on all times is fine, since it only enhances weak signals and appears not to affect any other factor.
But FAST ON has always given me fits, just about every time I have tried it. Since my soil conditions allow me to be high in Sens almost everywhere I hunt, including the beach for the most part, that if I use FAST ON, I get more Falsing, and the high tone (FERROUS) is going off more for Iron targets. I just plain do not like FAST.....

There was one time and only one time where I considered that FAST on got me two coins I would not have normally have gotten, but even then I was not 100% sure. It was in a heavy small iron laden site where in -16 Iron mask mode it was a constant chatter of iron hits.
I got one Large Cent with my normal settings and wanted to try again with less sensitivity and using FAST, well it worked, I got two more Large Cents, but again, maybe I would have gotten them anyway with FAST off, just not 100% sure.

I think what Beachcomber said is true, and it appears to be opposite of what ML is saying in their manual. Use FAST on when on the beach and the signals are not that cluttered.

But, I believe the best way to get the most out of the Explorer when hunting in heavy cluttered areas is to go SLOW, and next time go SLOWER.

JMHO

Mike, as we know there are just so many variables out there!!!

Different levels of iron trash, mineralisation, coke and charcoal etc.

Some folks are in situations out there at which deep and fast on would work just fine; others just don't.

We do have machines that flex the gray matter eh!

Obviously if target ID suffers when using fast or deep then both would really make it suffer, especially in areas where there is allot of iron. Makes you really wonder what would happen with both off period. Hey Mike try that in your test garden.

Yeah, I've always favored Deep ON and Fast Off and go slow and I suspect that I still will. But I'll play around with it when I have a chance and tell my results. Thing is, I ALWAYS want deep. I don't hunt clad when I land hunt and most of the targets I'm looking for are at least 6 inches deep. And I don't use the Explorer at the beach at all...I have the Excal for that. But versatility is the best part of the Explorers and there is a time and place for every setting under the touchpad. (Sounded like a song for a second there!)
