My accidental results from fast and deep combined:

And I hope you have a few goodies to post tomorrow night. I will be looking for a post from you and I hope you make some nice finds. Good Luck and HH.:detecting:

I really should post on this forum more often. I usually just browse on this site. I have only gotten on twice in the past 2 weeks....

Sunday I got an 1883 seated dime and 9 indian heads and the saturday before that I got an 1853 silver 3 cent, 1841-O and 1872 seated dimes, as well as 2 indian heads and 2 shield nickels.

Where are you located? You must be in an older State to be finding that kind of stuff. Lucky You!!! I find a few Seated if I am Lucky and the Indians and occasionally a Shield Nickel for the year but I never have found a 3-Cent Silver. I found a 2-Cent Piece and 2 Morgan Dollars but have yet to find either of the 3-Cent Pieces, a 20 Cent Piece, Large Cent, or even a Flying Eagle Cent. Those are on my want to find list someday but I think I may have to do some traveling to find those Coins. Hope you hit it big tomorrow and Good Luck and HH as always.

Central Indiana is where I'm at. The older items came from a virgin spot that my buddy found. About 90 coins have come from there the past few weeks, newest being 1890. He dug a seated half dime, 1834 bust half dime, and a large cent that day.... 3 coins right there that I have never dug. I was jealous, but I couldn't complain with what I did find.

Then the 9 indians and seated day came from just going to random lots in the 'ghetto' part of my town which is also in the historic district. Most of the homes date from 1880s to 1910 or so. About half of every block is just a grassy lot. One hole had 4 indian heads in it...

I've been reading a lot of posts saying to slow down but none refering to distance of the sweep vs. time elapsed vs. coil size...In the limited testing I've done with the SE it seems to respond better & deeper with a fairly fast, (what I consider fast) say about 2 seconds per 5 ft. It seems to me that I'll lose the signal if I sweep too slow on a deep target... I generally run with fast off deep on & try to stay out of the real trashy areas until I can get a smaller coil...Right now I only have the 10" stock... If the SE acts like some of the other detectors I've owned, as I decrease the size of the coil I need to slow down the sweep speed accordingly...What's your take??? And advice...TT:please:

I usually use the Stock Coil myself in clean area's and my sweep speed depends on how old the site and how deep everything is. If it is a really old site, say more than 100 years old, then I would say my sweep speed is about 4-5 seconds every 6 feet or so. If the place is newer and the targets are easy to get signals off of, then I will have a Sweep Speed much like yours. I am just over 6 foot tall and I have long arms. In Trashy area's, I use the Joey Coil and I go just as slow with this as the Stock Coil listening for those close together signals. And one other thing. When I say Sweep Speed, this refers to only one pass in one direction. Hope this helps and Good Luck and HH.

I'll check it out today but with the stock 10" coil I'm almost positive that if I slow it down THAT much I'll lose targets...TT

I went to a past hot spot today and tried deep on fast off for about an hour. I didn't find any signals there that sounded any good. Then I flipped fast back on and went across the street and hit a little hot spot... 36 Buffalo, 93 Indian Head, 09 Barber Dime in XF in less than 5min time. Nothing else for a few more hours though. This park is pretty bare.

I then went to a pretty trashy old yard and dug a mercury dime at about 5" deep with fast off. But it was an iffy signal that I would've dug the other day when I got 5 indian heads from the spot but the ground was frozen so I was only digging the sure hits.

Now how much Trash or Iron was at this first spot you went to when you were using Deep On only? And how Trashy was the second site you went to across the street? If the sites are pretty Trashy, I would run with Fast On only. This will give you signals quicker than in Deep On Mode only and if you are questioning a signal, you can always go and change the setting to Deep On only and check the signal before you dig it if it is worth finding out what the object is. Sounds like you had a good day for a few nice finds and wish I could have been out doing the same this afternoon. Maybe this weekend! Glad you found a few keepers and Good Luck and HH on your next outing. :detecting:

Just because I find more than my share of the finds during the year, you would be very suprised if you were to try Local Parks in my area. Not Very Much for finds, just like your area I bet. It's the Research that pays off and without it, well, I just wouldn't be finding very much stuff at all. I admit, there is a few keepers in the Parks no matter how well someone detects them, but I too wish they were still loaded when I first started to detect them back in 2001. It isn't really the quantity that I like finding (but it does help), it's actually going out and finding something old and if it was only 1 Old Coin that a person found, that outing would be considered a success. I just hope to do well again next season and I already have researched a bunch of New Sites that may yeild some Very Old Coins and Relics. I just hope they do anyways. Good Luck when you get out again and HH.

I went back to the vacant lot and tried the Fast On, Deep Off that you suggusted. I dug 3 more indian heads, v nickel, silver war nickel, and 5 more wheats. They were all horrid signals that only read one way and usually had a decent tone but hit upper left on smart find. But, I don't think I would have found them if not for turning deep off.

Next time you get a signal like that, (if you were using Fast On) go over it with the other Recovery On together (Fast and Deep On) and see what it does to the signal. Then turn off both and turn the Recovery that you were not using before On (if you were using Fast On, then turn that Off and turn On Deep) and see what that does. This will show you what works well at that particular site and improve the rate of success with more finds. I am glad to hear that you seen a difference and I hope this helps you out in the field and gets you more nice recoveries. Good Luck and HH.
sure thats the problem??? Doesn't seem that that setting would cause that problem!
