My Air Test with my CZ-3D today.

I did as complete an air test as I could today.
My results are this:
Bobbing ground balance 5-5.5, volume=max, batt test OK. Test coin is a 1944 Merc that I found a week ago in less than 2" of soil.
Percentages are the percentage of Hi-Coin IDs. Disc=1
Sens setting -4 Sens. setting -5
depth 10.5" coil 8" coil 10.5" coil 8" coil
6" 95% 100% 100% 100%
7" 90% 95% 95% 95%
8" 20% 0% 75% 70%
9" 0% 0% 50% 20%
10" 0% 0% 10% 0%
This doesn't look like good enough results to me. Has anybody here air tested their CZ and if so, how did it compare?
I buried the Merc at 5". With the 8" coil I got only a 2 way hit. Iron in the other 2 directions (sens 4). With the 10.5" coil, I got 80% hits wth sens from 2.5 to 4.5.
Pinponting worked at 6" or less.
Thanks for reading, let me know what you think. I'm still going to call Fisher.
Thanks,
Dave

1st row is depth. 2nd row is % of coin hits at sens-4 w/10.5" coil. Row 3 is % of coin hits at sens-4 w/8" coil. Row 4 is % of coin hits at sens-5 w/10.5" coil. Row 5 is of coin hits at sens-5 w/8" coil.

Okay one problem. Don't run your volume at max. If you run your volume at a comfortable level even just a bit quieter deep signals and good targets will actually sound louder. Running the volume to loud makes it harder to hear deeper targets and makes your test results poor.

Actually, when running the volume past 5, only the weak signals are boosted. The strong ones are already at max at a setting of 5 and do not increase as the volume knob goes on up to 10. That's right out of the manual.

Hi Dave, I don't have much confidence in air testing but have thought about placing the target in a small container of dirt with a lid on it so you don't spill it and testing that way. Should act like a nice little test simulator. I tried a few air tests with my CZ7A when I received it and could hardly get it to sound off on coins at 6" and I know that's not right. HH, Mike

Hey I am only telling you what i found worked best on mine. Not what the manual says.

Jeff,
I wasn't yelling at you. I did try different volume levels. I could hear the signal no matter the vol. level. It was either there or it wasn't. I just used the max vol. as the test standard to make sure I heard any signal.
Dave

Yeah no problem, I found on mine low volumes made the targets jump out thats all. But everyone will get different results I am sure

Manually ground balance your machine before you air test. I had to do that with some Whites detectors to get a true reading.

The turn on and go preset is 5 but I always manually GB before detecting. I'm appreciate that you're still thinking about my problem though. I haven't heard back from the Fisher tech yet but it's only been a few days.
Thanks,
Dave

But do you manually ground balance before you air test was what i was getting at.

I just got finished reading "Fisher Intelligence" that's available on Fisher's website. There's an article in it called "CZ-3D Unique Operating Instructions", in which it states "Do not air test the CZ 3D in the enhanced mode. It needs the entire dirt matrix (with older generation coins) to operate as designated".
Could this be the problem?

Well..
Are you supposed to? I dunno...but I did. It worked out to close to the preset anyway. It would make sense to use the preset of 5 becuse you're not really penetrating the ground. Unless you can GB to air <img src="/metal/html/lol.gif" border=0 width=15 height=15 alt=":lol">
