Ok fellows.........Here are a couple of pictures of Lee's barber quarter. Sorry the pictures aren't that good, but at least you will get some kind of an idea of what the coin looks like. He took it to a couple of coin dealers in our area and they both agreed that it was a G4. One guy said it might retail for about $3,500, but that's not from a expert coin grader either. Just the same, a wonderful coin to find and a key date that we all would love to add to our collection.:clapping: Thanks for looking and HH.

That's what it's all about right there. Finding old coins in itself is wonderful but to unearth a monster like that is unreal. Congrats to Lee and what a find!!!

Sweet, congrats to your friend on a great find. I know a few years back another member from the St Louis area pulled a nice looking 01-S. So far for me I just have to wipe the drool from my lips and keep it on my wish list!!
 
thanx for posting. What state did he find that in? There's a lot of us here, who hunt SF parks, who keep thinking that one of those puppies SHOULD be "right around the corner" :) We find S mint coins almost exclusively, and some, in mint condition. I mean, if you're hunting mere miles from the SF mint, GO FIGURE that most coins are S's! But so far, one of those has eluded me :(
 
Tell Lee not to sell it to a coin dealer. They are WAY too low in what they'll give you for coins! Always!
 
Edd be sure and tell Lee, like Neal says to not sell it to a coin dealer. Nothing against dealers but they are similar to car salesmen. There are 2 or 3 books out that show the price of coins. The Red Book as we all know and then there are Blue Books and I am sure others as well. The Blue Book actually shows what the dealer will pay you for the coin which is what they told Lee with the $3500, he will turn around and sell it for a couple of thousand more. My Red Book is only a 2008 but it shows it to be $5500 in G-4 Condition, not sure if it would grade quite that high but he needs to send it in to be graded. Bottom line is it is worth more than $3500 regardless of what the dealers told him. See you guys Sunday if we don't get snowed in. HH John
 
Lee is no dummy John and I doubt that he will be selling it to any dealer anytime soon. I'm sure Lee will just hang onto it and put it in his collection and show it off from time to time.:wiggle: Going down for my chemo in a little bit. Hope to see you this Sunday. HH.

I don't think you have to worry about Lee selling that coin to any coin dealer Neal. I'm sure Lee will just put it in his collection and hold onto it for a very long time. It will just go up in value as we all know. HH.

No problem with the post Tom. Glad that I was able to do it for everyone. We are in Washington state and surprisingly we do seem to get our share of San Fransico mint coins here and sometimes get lucky like Lee did and snag a nice key date worth some big bucks. Keep trying Tom and like you said, you live in the area where S minted coins are from and one day you might just dig up a key date also. HH.

Thanks and I will be sure and tell Lee about all the nice replies from all of you.:super: I'm still drooling myself and that coin is just a drop in the bucket as to the numerous coins out there that we all would like to find someday. HH.

oh we/I DO dig up key S mint seateds and barbers here. Even some '09s vdb are found now and then. It's just that the '01s barber quarter is eluding me still :)
 
nice coin, I would send it in to be evaluated & graded professionally if I was him.
