My Carrot is eating it's battery when turned off

KRT (Ont)

New member
I got the pin pointer a couple of years ago from a dealer friend who was going out of business and he gave me such a good deal I could"nt turn it down even though I have no use for one as I never cut a plug or dig a hole. The only time I used it was with the Ace 250 looking for roofing nails in the yard a year or so a go.. I never did any detecting last year as on my next birthday I will be 85 and am wearing out. So the Carrot was not used till I checked it the other day and the battery was dead. Made the mistake not taking the battery out when I put it away. There was no sign of leaking and when I put another battery in it worked great. The next day no go, put in a brand new battery 9.4 volts and it worked great,24 hrs later tried it and no go, checked battery and reading was 4.4 volts dropped 5 volts in 24 hrs with carrot turned off. Any body ever hear of this happening? What is my next move? Garbage can as I never need one. KRT

Sorry to hear you had a dead battery. The 9 volt batteries don't come cheap. I believe the answer to your problem is in your posted comment.

What probably happened, was that the battery discharged itself over time. 9 volt batteries are work horses, and don't have the same shelf life as AA batteries. Did you put in a new battery or just continued with the one that was in it? The Garrett Carrot comes shipped with a carbon battery, which don't hold a charge at the best of times.

Or, due to the many programs on the Garrett Carrot, you may have accidentally unknowingly left it turned on.

Good luck! My gut feeling is that it is fine. Man.......85 and still detecting. Good for you! I hope I will be as lucky as you. All the best!:beers:

John: I put a brand new energizer battery 9.4 volts, tried carrot worked ok. turned it off and checked 24 hrs later and it didn't work. Checked battery and the voltage was 4.4 volts lost 5 volts in 24 hrs and it was turned off.

You did not mention those parameters on your post. Call Garrett 1 800 527 4011. Run it by them.

Good luck....John

I had that problem with mine. Then I noticed a frying sound coming from the button area of the unit. If left over night, the battery would be dead. I sent it to Garrett and they either repaired it or sent me a new one. That one did exactly the same thing. The frying noise could be heard if held to your ear. I am a little hard of hearing but my wife could hear it from many feet away. I never used it in the water, although it is supposed to be waterproof, i never used it on a wet field or in any rain and the pinpointer was like new. The second unit went back to Garrett. They sent me a brand new one and so far, after many outings and much use, it is working just fine and the battery life is outstanding. I think they were having an issue with the on/off buttons being defective and have now got the bugs worked out.

Thanks for your post James, it's good to know some one else has had the same problem. After reading your post I put a fresh battery in the carrot, put in my hearing aids, but could hear no frying sound. I am up here in Ontario Canada and do mostly coin hunting and really have no use for a pinpointer. I have been detecting since 1974 nd have found thousands of coins and have never cut a plug or dig a hole and I don't pop them with a screwdriver. I have been able to hunt in parks that other detectorists are not allowed, but I am going to be 85 in April so am slowing down. Currently using an ace 250 and love it. I used to be a multi brand dealer and tried a lot of detectors and the Ace is one of the best. HH Ken

Check the brand of the battery. I have a carrot also and when I first got it I went thru batteries like crazy. I read a post somewhere that you MUST use good 9 volt batteries, the ones you buy at Walmat or the dollar store don't last a day. You will pay more but believe me they last. I have had the same battery in my carrot all summer and it is still working fine. Make sure there isn't any dirt or junk on the battery terminals and you should be good to go.
Good luck HH
