My Deus vs CTX 3030 and I lost bad, what am I doing wrong?

Damianicus

New member
Hunting a school yesterday with a friend. He had a CTX3030 with that massive coil. I had the Deus with 9" coil. While he got 3 Mercs, silver Washington quarter, Rosie, and a large cent. I got a lot of memorial pennies and some clad. Now I know I need to get used to the Deus but it was so discouraging I wanted to go grab my AT PRO. Now I like having a machine I can customize but it's at that time when it just made me second guess every setting.

The two customs I was using:

Coins:
Disc 27 - 4 tones (200/502/651/791)(27-60-90)
Sens 90
Freq 12
Iron Vol 1
Reac 2, Silencer 2
Audio Re 3, Overload 1
Notch 00-00

Deep Coins:
Disc 8 - 5 tones (155/301/503/800/155)(8-39-56-97)
Sens 94
Freq 12
Iron Vol 1
Reac 1, Silencer 3
Audio Re 5, Overload 1
Notch 00-00

Any help would be appreciated. At one point my friend dropped his Merc down a 7 inch hole and filled it back in so I could pass over it, and I was having a really hard time hearing it!!

Here's a pic of my finds, lot of trash sounded like "dig me"

I think your deep coins program has too much silencer going on. 3 in silencer is in my opinion too high for deeper coin targets, it kills the depth.

Hmm I'll look into silencer setting. Oh and forgot to mention in OP I was ground balancing.

Also, is he was using the 17" coil on the CTX he was covering almost twice as much ground on each swing.

Looks like one of my digs at the fairgrounds! You may also find that all other settings remaining the same (except for breakpoints), using 4 or 8 kHz will significantly reduce the amount of small aluminum trash dug. Try Deus Fast and change freq to 4 or 8 and put reactivity at 3, silencer at 0. This will make <6" coins POP...on that large aluminum can slaw try raising the coil as you sweep the target and see how high you can still get a signal. Coin-sized targets will fade at only several inches while 1/2 of a 12oz soda can will still hit even if the coil is more than 12" off the ground!

You can run Disc in your first coin program at 8, just like the deep coin program and gain a tad more depth. Notch 8-27 in place of using disc at the same range - this will help with fringe-depth targets, especially while running reactivity 3, silencer 0. Also, notch 97-99 in 12 kHz for large iron targets. Notch 95-99 in 8 Khz for the same effect. Notch 92-99 in 4 khz for the same effect.

You will get to the point where things will suddenly 'click' for you with the Deus...but digging a BUNCH of trash targets among coins is the FASTEST way to learn the language, so to speak. I still dig TONS of trash, every hunt...still haven't quite trained my ear to dig the "round sounds only" since coins have a habit of hiding among undesirable targets.

Don't get discouraged - the learning curve on the Deus is significant - and I bet your partner was more familiar with his machine, and especially while he had half a football field as a coil LOL!

that's discouraging...

I have a CTX and I have a lot of experience with it, and here is my take.

If you have a Deus, I'll pick out all the silver coin targets before you can get to them if I'm hunting with my CTX. I'll dig 12.40+ which will give me all the silver and clad, leave everything less for you. I can pick and chose better.

Simply because the Deus target ID isn't as accurate as the minelab.

But, I'll miss things with the CTX that the Deus will dig and the Deus can find just as many coins at the end of the day if that makes sense.

I've done it a lot hunting with other people, I'll be off hunting for premium signals and pass on the good ones until I feel all the premium hits are gone then I'll focus on the iffy signals.

But you're not going to out hunt either of the machines with an AT Pro, so keep learning the detector it's an amazing machine. I've found a shocking amount of stuff in an area i've hunted out with my CTX.

Both machines are different and they compliment each other, one isn't better than the other over all, but one is better than the other at different things.

Once you get to a heavy iron site, instead of a heavy aluminum junk site you'll beat him, and I can guarantee he was fooled by some aluminum just as much as you were.

So what should Silencer be at? 0?
Yes he had the 17" coil and has had his CTX for 6mo+
It was a toss up for me, a used Deus or E-trac. I went Deus for the weight, swing speed, wireless, and what I read of its trashy area dominance,
Thanks for the settings and aluminum can tip, I appreciate the advice!!

Also how significant would the 11" coil help vs his 17" on deep targets? Or maybe I just don't invite his ass to hunt haha.

CZ gave you perfect advice!

Once it clicks 50% in your head, your gonna kill! then it only gets better from there.....

Wouldn't this silence dollar coin targets?

First off the 9 inch coil is not as deep as the 11
Your silencer is way to high. This setting impacts depth more than any other.
I never use more than 2 on the discrimination.
I use 8 kHz for deep coins. The lower frequencies will hit higher conductors deeper.
Reactivity of two is OK on version 3.2 On older versions the reactivity killed the depth
Notching the 97-99 is OK

The Deus is not the CTX and the CTX is not the Deus. In the open fields a guy swinging a monster coil will cover more ground and hit deeper. And to be honest the CTX is quite a machine. Find the iron and use the Deus for what it was made for. You will also find the Deus works better in freshly plowed fields than the CTX. It takes a while to learn the language and settings of a detector. To me that is the most fun of all.

That would be the last time I hunt with you. When I hunt with someone we pick areas. If you come into my area it better be because I want you to double check a signal.

For what its worth, you still got to get your coil over the silver.
I've been out with other guys hunting with our etracs and gotten killed by them.
I mean, I get 3 wheats and they pulling in 3- 4 silver coins each. It was very disheartening at first but I had to keep it in perspective. They just were in the better area of our 'area' , that's all. It was hard not to question my ability and detector.
But I look back and remember this:
That season I got out nearly 200 days, never found more than 4 silvers on any one hunt, and ended the year with 100 silver's and $489 in clad.
Keep the faith and keep swinging. Avoid the temptation of believing its always greener on the other side.
I have to learn my Deus now!
Cheers

sounds like the deus user would 'catch up' with the ctx user on the same site simply cause the ctx guy will have gone home with a sore arm while the deus guy would still be pretty fresh...

Yeah I picked up his CTX and was amazed how heavy it felt. I'm 47 and starting to feel the aches and pains I wanted a Deus to for the weight, wireless, and trashy powers. I think it was a matter of me having some settings wrong, being so new vs his whole season learning his CTX + that 17" coil.
