My first find!!!!

New member
I read and re-read everyone's advice ... then after practicing for a while I took my ACE 250 out to a trail head parking lot and began searching. After about 15 min I found my first penny!! I never would have thought that I would be so excited about finding a penny. Minted in 1977 it's the kind of penny that no one would bother picking up. But to me it's a beaut!

Thanks for your help everyone ... I really appreciate it.

Congratulations Dane.:clapping: Nothing builds confidence like success! Who cares the value of the find. All you have to do now, is repeat the process.

Way to go Dane. I'm pretty new at this myself and the best advice I could offer you is to not set yourself up for dissapointment. Expect progress to be made a little at a time, anything more than that should be considered a bonus. Like anything else, you get out of this what you put in to it, so get out with your detector as often as you can and have fun with it.

99 more and you will have a buck. The good stuff will show up.

I just got my metal detector last month. It is very true that the more you use it the better you get with it. Just keep swinging it. I've made 9 hunting trips in the last month and have found a total 115 coins worth $6.22, no rare or silver coins yet, but I know they will come. My last trip I found my first silver ring! Keep hunting. :detecting:

One other suggestion - I keep a little excel spreadsheet showing my hunts and keep track of how many of each coin I find on a particular hunt. It is quite rewarding seeing those coin counts and money total building up.

I wish I had stuck my first find aside. I never started segregating stuff until about 2 weeks after I started using an Ace 250. I knew my first coin was a zinc cent but it was in quite a pile. Slab that baby up and make it the first treasure in your brag book.

Congratulations. It gets much better than that!

Congrats... the first of many finds... Just keep on swinging and you will be amazed at what you will find..

I never turn my detector on that I dont find SOMETHING. Often it is just as you have found - a Zinc Memorial cent. Sometimes all I ahve to show is a handful of them and a pile of trash. BUt thta is how it goes. You detect because you like to, not because you will surely get rich.

So what was my first find? A 1936 Liberty Dime, with Wings and Phyrigian Cap - otherwise known as a Mercury dime. Just dumb luck that one.

The first one is the best one. There will be a lot more and better ones. Just have patience and you'll find lots of goodies.
