Let me begin by saying I was not planning any more hunts this weekend. Then I started reading some of Cintisteve's posts on the Whites boards where he is on a nice gold streak. Then old Graw had to post his great rings and watch. Then that 18k ring got posted and I started wondering where my gold was. If it could happen to those guys it could happen to me. I thought of my best clad and jewelry spot and decided to get up early and go. I actually woke up 2 hours before my alarm was set and the idea of a night hunt sounded like a good one. If you've never tried it you should think about it. Just be safe and keep your ears and eyes open. Best not to use headphones, I think. I also usually let the police know I'll be there too just in case somebody reports a miners light bobbing around at 4 am.
Onto my hunt. As I got to a fork in the road I opted to head to my best silver site rather than hit the school I had originally intended to go to which was around 15 miles further. I could always do both if my luck was bad. My first target was a spill (UW says two coins isn't a spill but I say it is at least last night it was) of two 1964D dimes. I then got three or four Wheats and then a nice shiny Merc. Another spill of three Wheats and then another Merc. I began expanding my grid and starting getting clad but still a Wheat here and there. About 1 1/2 hours in I got my fifth and final silver another Merc. Where are the silver quarters at this site? I've found a total of over a dozen dimes and 50 or 60 Wheats in four of five hunts there. I also found a junk ring. Detected for a total of 2 1/2 hours and my batteries were dying. I was done anyway.
Silver is exciting to see anytime but it really shines at night in the light of a head lamp. This hunt was my best silver coin hunt (5) and my best Wheat hunt (14) too. I came home and showered and cooked breakfast read some recent posts. I want to thank Bill for not posting his hunt earlier last night because if I'd read it I'd still be out trying to find more silver. My five little dimes look kind of puny next to his big pile from yesterday.
Since I'm fond of goals and statistics I feel compelled to report that I reached two interesting milestones. In 2009, I have found more Wheat cents and also more silver coins than I did in 2007 and 2008 combined. The coins that put me over the top are bottom/center of the photo. Off to my brag book. (Nod to Rosco Bookbinder.)
I guess the gold will have to wait even longer. I also think I'll have to stop reading this board because it always "gives me the itch." Speaking of itch, I got eaten alive even with bug spray on. I am also getting a rash on my arm where a very worn pad contacts my sweaty arm on one side of my arm cuff. I'm going to replace it today. When I got my 2500 I had a wobbly shaft and a chipped pad and when I contacted Mary she sent me a new lower shaft that corrected the wobble and a set of pads to correct that minor defect.

It's been a while since that 12.5 inch coil has been off my 2500. I just love it and I wish someone had been more forceful about making me use it more often earlier in my odyssey.
