My First Time out!

Hi folks! Today I received my GTAx-550 in the mail and I managed to get an hour of hunting in before being eatin' alive by mosquitos. I'm hoping some of you experts out there can help me ID these things. I hit a spot I found 2 weeks ago that was littered with broken glass, pipes, etc. There was so much trash on this site I found I was getting 3 or 4 signals per sweep. Most of them were junk and erratic. So I started digging only solid hits. Here is what I came up with. The first two things I landed were these two large bullets! One is 1" long and 9/16ths across. The other is about 3/4 of an inch and the same width. They both appear to have been fired and are very heavy lead. Semi Hollow bottoms and hollow tips. I have no clue how old these are!? I guess not too old as they aren't musketballs!? I pressed on and dug up the other piece at 3" deep. It gave me a 50 cent piece reading. It's what looks to be a medal of some sort. It's a little rough, but that is to be expected. It says "Overseas Contingent- Allies War 1815 (I think)" In the center it looks like there is a person standing with either their arms crossed in front of them, or some sort of belts from a military uniform. On all the points there are symbols. The ones I can make out are as follows 1) 2 swords crossed 2)Two rifles crossed 3)A larg Horn 4)An Anchor 5)can't tell...two things crossed Sorry for ranting. I'm excited! *hahah* Anyhow, it measures 1.5" x 1.5"Any thoughts!? It sure looks to say 1815....and with the swords, and horn....it would make sense to be of that age. Any ideas, thoughts, or just comments about my finds?

Wess, I can't help you identify your finds, but I'm impressed at what you've done in your first hour of hunting. Get some mosquitoe repellant and pound that spot hard. It will probably be worth digging a lot of that junk that might be masking more good stuff. Great start! It will only get better as you learn your detector. HB

Very nice finds there Wess. I love that medal "Overseas Contingent- Allies War 1815". Very nice find for sure. Looks like you are headed down an interesting path. Nice photo setup.

Thanks John! I was very happy with the 550, and pleasantly surprised by the results of my first hunt. The medal is very cool, and I've been told it's very rare. I was also told the bullets date to the 1860's or 70's. The Photo software was created by my cousin, so I got it for free. It is a great little program though, and very easy to use. The pics I took with my Sony Cybershot 5.1 Megapix. digital cam. Thanks for the comments!

Very nice finds, Wess. I think your hooked!!! I do think a 4.5" coil would be worth a try at this site. If you found stuff like you did you're sure to find some coins also.
Did you get the email I sent you? Or did it get lost like your detector some where in the electronic post office!!!

Great finds Wes. Consider yourself hooked.

Hi Bill. Yes, I won't even try to deny that I'm hooked *hahah* I was thinking I should find some coins as well. I actually hit the site again tonight for an hour, but dug nothing but trash. The old nails, wire, scrap, etc is EVERYWHERE! I'm hitting these targets right on the surface. I tried to pick up all the metal I could see, but every sweep of the coil gives several hits, and pinpointing one of them is difficult. NEver know which one I'm on. This is going to be a difficult site to detect, but I think it's worth it if yesterdays finds are any indication. I didn't get your e-mail actually!! Where did you send it? wess.thompson@sympatico.ca
