My GQ finally runs smooth in CA! And I found fold today!

Call me stupid. I have had my GQ for almost a year now and have been having a hell of a time trying to use it. I found coins. But unless they came in strong enough to blow your ears off, I could not find the deepies because of the unstable threshold.
I tried almost everything setting to no avail. I actually posted her for sale a few months ago asI was getting frustrated. Good thing I ask for a high price just to keep buyers away.
Well, I am a person who doesnt give up easy. 2 weeks ago, I borrowed my friend Randy's GQ just to see if both would operate the same. I took his out hunting and guess, what, they didnt. His was more stable. I looked it over and the only thing I could find different with his unit was the way he routed the coil cables. I used to wrap my cables around the shaft just like my old Whites PI. His was zip tied straight up the shaft.
I never would have believed it but the difference wa the same a night and day. Halleluyah, my GQ is finally stable. And guess what, first time out today and I bagged my first gold with it.

yes it is a must for the gq to run that cable up the shaft there are alot of post on this forum about the cable check it out in search but when i firsty got my gq it would rise in thresahold when waves washed by so reading the post i discoved and i really forget who i think it was randy from down south that solved this problem my newer gqv2 is really quiet very happy with the performance also one other thing paul ca has some post on a cable cover like a clear cover over your cable to protect it from hitting it with the scoop etc. thats very cool also and one other thing a really good scoop for the deepys im using chuck the scoops scoop the 7-11 and i riged up a way to pull it behind me so dont have to carry a heavy scoop since ive done this the deepys are a pleasure to recover now and have not walked a way from a target cause im worn out trying to find it then i click it back on and opff to the next target it also leaves a trail line on were ive been on the wet sand so i jest know generally were ive already been i glad that you have finally figured out your cable deal what a relief to find such a simple solutiuon happy digging the deep ones and here comes the fourth of july so get new batterys and get ready for the goodys yeeeehaaaaa!!!! larry ca

Eric has installed on his new Aquasearch V2 cable protection. He use`s polythene Spirowrap. It is easy to put on and take off the coil cable. It fits neatly into the strain relief at the top of the gland and is UV stable for use outdoors. He also uses it use to hold the coil windings together before it is potted.
I also love the the velcro cable wraps he supplies with the detector.

I agree with Mr Bill. That is far too much of a movable loop of cable down near the coil. You want to have it as in Murdoch's picture below. One of the problems with the high sensitivity to small targets that the GS has, is that it detects any movement of the cable braid, down near the coil. Try and get some Spirowrap to put on the lower half of the cable. If may come under a different name in the US, but it is readily available from suppliers of electrical cable. It comes in different diameters, but get one that has an internal diameter of 4 - 4.5mm (0.15 - 0.17in) before it is put on. This will give a nice tight fit. It not only gives extra support to stop the cable moving, but gives it protection against sharp rocks, coral etc., when in the water.

Hi All,
One good source for buying "spiral wrap" and a lot of other plastic parts is US Plastics. They even have the wrap in 3 flourescent colors for those who want to add some "color" to their machines.
The size you want is the 1/4" OD.
It is amazing what one can do with this stuff. As an example, I had two small granddaughters of a friend over a while back and to keep them happy, I made them a necklace made from some bright red spiral wrap. They played with them for hours. Just be careful to only connect them using a couple of wraps so they come apart easily.
Hopefully, the link noted below will take you to the spiral wrap section. If not, then just go to the US plastic home page and do a search for spiral wrap.
Now, as for self adhesive velcro for cable wraps, there are a few places that carry it. One is Cargo Gear. They have several styles and sizes. I prefer the one wrap tape rather than the straps, but I have both. Cargo Gear's website link to the velcro is:

I forgot about running the cord straight up the shaft.My seahunter mark II is a little unsteady and I think this is the reason my first one was more steady.We do the same with the Excaliburs but use black electrical tape and run the cord on the side of the lower shaft to reduce friction in the water.Thank you for the reminder,good hunting,Joe

For all the techs with multimeters; a few 2 inch lengths of spirowrap around the top half (instrument end) of your test leads saves you from the dreaded tangles and keeps the leads in pairs.
In Oz it's $3.75 for 10 metres (SPWR10) from WES Components. Very handy stuff.
They have also got velcro "one-wrap" and "sticky-back" (2-parts) rolls and "one-wrap straps". Try for a local source as the postage costs could excede the product cost.
Such clever inventions these bits of plastic. cheers

I got spiral cable wrap at Radio Shack. 10 feet for $3.29. Part number 278-1638.
I found self gripping Velcro garland tie (1/2 inch by 30 feet)at Jo Ann Fabrics.
