My LARGEST coin to date

The Fog

New member
Hey what's up fellow safarians. Spent 5 hours in the woods Saturday, I found about 20 shotgun shells, and a bottlecap. My last signal of the day was a screamer, figured it was a can. 8 inches or so down I pull a large round disc that was bigger than a silver dollar and twice as thick. At first I thought it was a rosette or just a piece of machinery, it was caked with dirt and couldn't make out anything so I threw it in my junk pouch. I met my hunting partner back at the car and told him I only found shotgun shells and a metal disk. I showed him the disk and he said it could be a coin... i said there's no way this giant thing was a coin. Well per usual (and I hope he doesn't read this.) he was right, it's a coin. It is a 1770 Russian 5 kopek, it's in pretty rough shape but you can see everything. Now what on earth is a 1770 russian 5 kopek doing in the new england woods? I have no idea. I put a large cent next to it for scale... it's a beast of a coin.

Wow! That is quite a coin, literally and to be a 1770 is really impressive. Wouldn't it be interesting to know the history of that coin.

Very nice and diffrent find.

Awesome Fog!!! Sweet find for sure. What is it made of?
Thanks for posting,
Bunker

Thanks Bunker... it's copper, it would have looked like the images below if it hadn't been in the ground for 240 years!

Kschae4, I only use custom coin mode when i detect. I have -10 thru 11 blacked out and 40 blacked out, everything inbetween is open. If i used all metal mode i would be digging holes every 2 feet and could open my own ironworks factory by days end. The kopek rang in at 38 as just about all large cents do.

I wonder how you would lose a coin like that in the first place? You'd think if it fell out of a pocket, a person would notice the weight loss or hear it hit the ground. One thing's for sure, your finds are among the most interesting and remarkable I've ever seen.

Brookie

Thanks Brookie, I spend hundreds of hours swinging the coil, and more often than not I come up empty, but I like walking in the woods so it's no biggie. As far as not noticing it fell out of a pocket.... they had no pockets on clothing in the 1700's. A pocket back then was a sash or pouch that hung outside of the clothing.

Very strange find from the Usa, i have found 2 of them myself.:detecting:
