My latest finds from last weekend's hunt.

Hello again everyone. I'm back again with the finds from last weekend's hunt. I would have had them posted sooner but I have been fighting a nasty head cold this week. Hopefully it will be gone by tomorrow for tomorrows outing. Anyways, lets get to the finds and the story.

Well....I was about to do some hunting on Friday Afternoon but got sidetracked once again. Sure is funny how your about to leave to go detecting and something comes up at the last moment. Oh Well....I did get about an hour in but was only rewarded with a 1926-d Wheatie from a ballfield.

Saturday rolled around and once again Dale, Tim and I headed out in search of more keepers. We decided to head back to where I had found the Barber Half and other goodies the weekend before and got there around 7:30am. We hunted this site and landed a few more keepers. The finds were a bit tougher to make but we all got some.

The first target for the day turned out to be an 1883 Indian Head, and it wasn't but 2" Deep. As we worked this spot, I decided to go over where the Ballfield would have been....mainly where I thought the backstop would have been and the chance of finding some Silver. I know Tim worked this area pretty hard a couple years back but I figured if there was Silver still in the Ballfield area, then he possibly missed a few over in this area as well. I started working the area and it didn't take me long to find my first Deep Signal. It read 28 on Digital and was about 6" Deep. I dug a plug and sure enough a Merc comes to light. I start working a tight pattern and started to pop out a few Wheats and some Silver. About a half hour or so goes by and Dale finally works his way towards me. He asks if I was finding much and I told him "Yeah......2 Walkers, 3 Silver Quarters" and Dale goes "Aaaah B.S!" I started laughing because I like toying with Dale because he takes everything serious most of the time. I then told him I had only dug like 3 Wheats, 5 or 6 Silver Dimes and a Silver Quarter. He then asked where and I pointed to the area I had just worked. He then decided to work around the area where I was and got a Merc and a couple Wheats as well.

As I kept detecting I noticed Tim talking to Dale and didn't take time to see what they were talking about so I just kept hunting. I decided to go up a small hill where the backstop probably sat and started to notice just how many cans and other Junk was in ground here. As I started walking I got a good hit but it was in a small area. It sounded good and it showed about 6" Deep but there was Junk around it as well. I decided to dig it due to the Depth of the Target and glad I did. At about 6" I seen Silver! Quarter I thought. I reached into the hole and pulled the Coin out that was 80% or better covered in dirt and was surprised when I seen I was holding a Walking Liberty Half Dollar. I yelled out to Tim and yelled WALKER!!! He then yelled over to Dale and pointed at me. Dale took off his headphones and Tim says "see....I told you you should have gone up there, he just got a Walker!". I guess what Tim was talking with Dale about earlier was that Tim had found 5 or 6 Silver Quarters and a bunch of Dimes in the area where I got the Walker so you can just about feel what Dale was feeling like after he heard I pulled a Walker from this area. I then worked it a bit more and only got another Silver Dime and a Wheatie or so.

We then decided to go try somewhere else around 1:30pm. Tim ended up getting a Canadian Quarter in the 40's, an Old Canadian Dime, Merc or 2 and some Wheats. Dale ended up finding some Wheats and a few Silver Dimes (Mostly Rosie's). I ended up getting a Walker, Silver Quarter, 4 Merc's, 4 Rosie's, 1 Canadian Dime, 1 Indian Head, and 8 or 9 Wheats.

The next spot was a Dance Hall that we come across. We stayed here the rest of the day with very little to show for. Dale got a Silver Quarter, 2 Dimes and a few Wheats. His best find was a Merc with 5 or 6 Wheats stacked together in the same hole. As he peeled them apart, he found remanents of a Dollar Bill between the Merc and a Wheatie. Pretty Cool Find!!! Dale said he could still unfold that small piece of Dollar Bill. Now that's something you don't find everyday! Tim got 2 Silver Quarters, a few Wheats and a 1897 Indian Head. I only was able to pull a few Wheats and a Silver Rosie. Lots of trash with Screwcaps being the #1 dug item here.

Sunday, I decided to head out and drive through some towns to see if anything had changed. I stopped off at a town and noticed a Water Tower sitting where a building must have sat once. I decided to try that and popped out a Token and a Wheatie. This must have been hit before since no New Coins were found.

I then tried a Park and popped out a Standing Liberty Quarter along with 3 Rosie's and a few Wheats. The Quarter was a shock but apparently noone had detected in that one area since the rest of the Park was dead.

I then found some other boulevards to hit while out driving around Sunday and got a Merc, Canadian Dime, a few Wheats and 3 Injuns. Not a bad hunt on Sunday since I didn't start hunting until Noon and quit around 7:00pm.

Here's the totals for finds. Silver consisted of a whopping 18 of them...being 1 Walking Liberty Half Dollar dated 1947-d, 1 Standing Liberty Quarter dated 1917-s (type 2), 1 Silver Quarter dated 1961-d, 5 Mercury Dimes dated 1929,1940-s,1942,1942-d,1944-d, 8 Roosevelt Dimes dated 1946,1947-d,(2)1951,1952-d,1954-d,1956-d,1959-d and 2 Canadian Dimes dated 1902-H and 1963. No Nickels were found during the weekend so that will be one of the priorities this weekend...to land some Older Nickels. Pennies consisted of 4 Indian Heads dated 1883,1894,1901 and 1902. 26 Wheats were found and they were dated (2)17,(3)18,19,23,(3)26-d,28-d,29-s,30-s,(2)35-d,(2)37-d,38-d,40-d,40-s,(3)46-d,(2)47-d and 58-d. I also dug a Token Good For 5

Nice coins and nice reporting of your recent adventures. That Walker is nice as is the SLQ and the older Canadian dime. The SLQ is a beater date and mintmark. The token is listed in the 1992 edition of North American Merchant Tokens. They state that merchant was listed in the directories form 1913-1945 but don't mention the type of business. Neat find and in nice shape. Thanks for your reports and HH!

Enjoy your posts, James. James Tikalsky is listed in the 1920 census, age 41, as a salesman of confections, so maybe he owned a bakery or candy store. His is the only Tikalsky family in ND.

I was surprised at how well preserved it was since a lot of the tokens found have some type of corrosion build-up or pitting to them. That's just one less ND Token I need now. Glad you like the postings as well and hope you dig a few goodies on your next outing. Best of Luck and HH!

You are the master extractor!! Great finds, Its good to see you back here.
