My main problem when hunting is aluminum.

Can slaw, pull tabs, pieces of siding, partial pieces of cans, small pieces of flashing, bottle caps, small pieces of foil from bags, etc.

I like to detect with little or (mostly) no discrimination so I go in my backyard, lay out a variety of crap I picked up in the field with a few coins and a gold ring.

Then I try the 9" LF, 9" MF and 6" HF coils to see how each one reacts.

I have used the MF coil the longest so thats the one I understand the most.

Obviously the 6'HF DD has the best separation but I find TID and multi tone more jumpy on the bad stuff with the MF coil.

Still learning the 3kHz coil but it does seem possible to ID some pull tabs as pull tabs with it.

I can never give up on the gold ring hunting, one gold ring can be worth $200 in clad. I have found three this year along with about 40 pieces of alum. junk thinking it might be a ring.

Not to bad, 3 out of 43?!

Hopefully with each new outing and a lot more practice I will come closer to defeating (?) my most hated enemy aluminum.

PS I'm starting to dislike beer drinkers more and more everyday, which is kind of funny because I've been known to have one or two on occasion. Beer can crap is everywhere!

......I understand what you're going through Denny.....we ALL go through it.
Unfortunately there isn't a detector out there that will ID a pulltab or piece of aluminium 100%. They also give identical signatures as good stuff so they have to be dug.
It always amazes me when people disc out pulltabs. You might just as well call it disc out jewelry.

Over in the UK we tend to dig tons of small aluminium ointment tubes used to treat sheep mastitous... (if that's how you spell it!!)
It drives us barmy!!!!!!!

Good posts Denny and Gaz. Yes, myself and all of us have the same problems. Scads of newer pennies(1c) is what I also hate and are also a problem. There is no way around it unless you use more discrimination and also lose gold jewelry. I have an X-70 and I wonder if an E-Trac is more surgical to knock out some aluminum better and also knock out newer pennies better.?

I have read that the E-Trac and the Sovereign may help with knocking out some aluminum with the 2-dimensional discrimination circuity but I think those guys are probably digging their share of junk too.

Especially if they are hunting for gold.

But I don't have $1000 plus to find out yet, need to find another 8 or 9 gold rings before that becomes an option!

The X-Terra's are great and I think the more time we invest in using them the better we will get.

I agree the new pennies are a problem and the wheaties we find are so bad we can barely clean them enough to see a date.

But again the beer can pieces is the worst for me, I sure wish the those guys would switch to whiskey out of a glass bottle!

I've had an ETrac and I hunt with my mate who still has one.
ETracs still dig aluminium as again.....it comes in the as jewelery or silver.....no choice but to dig.

Boy, I sure hope so.

But some how I get the sinking feeling that the guys drinking beer in the woods are not worrying too much about recycling or the beauty of their surroundings.

My take on things

I dig a fair bunch of pull tabs and twist top beer bottle caps. Here is the caveat, usually I find that their tone is, different, more scratchy and jumps more than 2 numbers at least once. OR it has had more than one tone. Problem is that several of the Indians or the Mercs I have dug have had similar issues. Shoot, even the shallow Pennies some times do not repeat. So... I made a decision, I will dig a little more junk so that I can dig more good stuff. I am thinking this will help make up for my hearing loss in the higher frequencies. I am not the best guy out here or the one that brings in the most keepers, but I do understand how the machine functions and the sounds it makes. The real problem here is that SOME TRASH SOUNDS GOOD AND SOME COINS DO NOT. When I am in an old home site I look for a reason to dig, not a reason to not dig.

The more I dig the better I get.

It drives us barmy!!!!!!! Great Phrase, I hope to be able to commit it to memory and find a reason to use it.

One of the best units i ever used for newer tras was a fisher 1266x 8 " coil sens high ,disc 1 set at 6 1/2 disc 2 set at 7 .

I find the same, but you just never know for sure until you dig.
