Well, I've been out for about a week now with my new safari, and im still having some trouble pinpointing some of my targets. And it still seems to be pretty chatty. Does the safari not do very well in trashy areas? It has helped by slowing down. Any suggestions for all the chatter? Im going to a less trashy area tomorrow, so I hope that helps me out. My sensitivity is set on auto.

Hello with mine i turned down the sensitivey to 19 just off auto and turn the threshold down to 9 thats if youi use headphones seem to help me.

Doing an "X" over your target and then using a good quality pin-pointer helps tremendously when trying to locate your target. The Safari is probably more chatty than your previous detector because the 11" DD Pro-coil goes deeper and because of its larger size, hits on more targets than what you were using before. Most of us use manual sensitivity so that we can match it to on-site conditions. If you have certain kinds of trash causing much of your chattiness, either notch them out (reject them) or set up a program that will. Personally I think the Safari does an excellent job in trashy areas, but it is necessary to slow down your swing in direct proportion to the amount of trash that a site has. With practice you are going to be able to pick out the sound of a coin in among all that trash, it may take awhile, but with time it will become a piece of cake. A last resort would be to buy a smaller coil for the Safari, so as to get better separation in trash.

Hi Isaacdad, Good advice from Mtnmn. The Safari is chatty because it is picking up EVERYTHING. It took me awhile to figure that out. It can pick out the tiniest metal, smaller than a rivit on your jeans. When you go to a park or something like that with a lot of activity it WILL be chatty. That means it is working! Pay attention to the solid repeatable signals for now. Cross your coil over it in different directions. If your sound rings BOTH ways as you back and forth swipe then you should dig it. Don't dig if it is a real low tone. Learn your tones in your test garden. It may take you a good year or two to REALLY learn the machine. Throw some stuff on the ground and listen and watch the numbers. ALSO, go out into a clean field and you will see how quiet it can be, in fact if you can, I would start out that way, in clean fields. Parks and old home sites will drive a beginner crazy..so don't feel bad. It still drives me crazy, but I can pick out the goodies by the SOUND, the NUMBER, and the SOLID repeatable signals. You will dig a lot of old nails because for some reason they can sound like pennies. It is not perfect. Go slow. Use auto for now, don't go buying a smaller coil, you won't need it once you learn. (Just my opinion) As far as pinpointing goes, I don't even use the pinpointer on the machine because THE PINPOINTER DOES NOT DISCRIMANATE...so it will pinpoint every little piece of iron around the target in a trashy area. Like Mtnman said make an X and the target is dead center of the coil. I'm rarely off by using that technique. But go to a farm field and try something less challenging as you learn. In a month you will be posting pictures of all the treasures you are going to find. Also don't get your shovel or stel tip boots near that thing! Good luck.

I have no problm with trashy areas just go slow.The chat and noise you will get used to I hated mine ant firs but love it it is the best.Just remember high number are silver 38 39 but I would go slow you will be amazes

There is a lot of good advice here from experienced Safari users. I thought I would add my personal experience to the lot. The Safari is a high quality detector and it speaks a language of its own. You will have to spend quality time getting use to the tones. Read the owners manual several times and experiment with the adjustments after you think you are getting the hang of it. I would suggest using a good pair of headphones. The tones are the key to the Safari's success. I would spend time playing around with the good targets you have dug or have around and do some air testing and listen to the tones and mix in some junk and compare the tones and line up the tones from low to high with using the junk and good targets. Do not use air test for depth testing just listen to the tones. As for pinpointing if you are having problems pinpointing your target, try these couple of tricks I have used and work for me. One is raise your loop higher as you are making your X swings it will narrow the signal and help you pinpoint it, you might also try a circle around the suspected target location. The second is to use the pinpoint feature to narrow the signal by using the button when the signal is on a fringe area of the signal. Anyway you cut it, practice makes perfect. Have fun with your Safari and hold your patience, it will get better.

The pinpoint feature works well, I find it more useful when you hit the pinpoint button at the edge of your target signal, it will narrow the signal and pinpoint more accuratly.
